Martin County School District Elections

August 30, 2016
General election date:
November 8, 2016
Enrollment (13–14):
18,792 students

One of the five seats on the Martin County School District school board was up for by-district general election on November 8, 2016. District 5 incumbent Michael DiTerlizzi filed for re-election and ran against two challengers in the primary election on August 30, 2016: Joshua Ferraro and Larry Green. DiTerlizzi and Green received enough votes in the primary and faced each other in the general. DiTerlizzi emerged from the general election victorious, winning another term on the board. The District 2 seat was originally set to be on the primary ballot, but when the filing deadline passed and incumbent Marsha Powers faced no opposition in her bid for re-election, the election for the seat was canceled and Powers was automatically re-elected.[1]

Florida school board elections function differently than elections of this kind in most states. Primary elections for Florida school boards were held on August 30, 2016, though these primaries are functionally general elections. A general election was held on November 8, 2016, between the top two vote recipients in any race where no candidate receives the majority of votes. Unopposed elections were canceled and did not appear on the ballot. Special elections were held in conjunction with some general elections to fill vacancies.
