2026 battleground election
Ballotpedia identified the March 3, 2026, Republican primary as a battleground election. The summary below is from our coverage of this election, found here.
Incumbent Daniel Crenshaw (R), Steve Toth (R), and four other candidates are running in the Republican primary for Texas' 2nd Congressional District on March 3, 2026. The filing deadline was December 8, 2025. As of November 2025, Crenshaw and Toth led in fundraising and local media attention.[3]
According to the Houston Chronicle's Jeremy Wallace, Crenshaw, who media outlets described as a rising star in the GOP after he was first elected, "has the power of incumbency and is one of the most recognizable members of Congress."[4] Toth is a state representative who the Texas Tribune's Gabby Birenbaum described as "aligned with the rightmost faction of the Texas Legislature...by far the best-known primary opponent Crenshaw has faced in his career."[3] Crenshaw defeated Jameson Ellis (R) 75%–17% and 60%–40% in the 2022 and 2024 primaries.
Crenshaw was elected to the House in 2018 and is a U.S. Navy veteran. He is running on his record which he says includes bringing flood mitigation funding to the district and "leading the fight in Congress to defeat the Mexican drug cartels". Crenshaw says he stands for "common sense policies that ensure our nation’s prosperity and security, represent our Foundational values, and give Texans a reason to once again be proud of their leaders."[5]
Toth was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2012. He ran unsuccessfully for state Senate in 2014 and U.S. House in 2016 before being re-elected to the state House in 2018. He is running on his record as a state legislator, which he says includes "banning both Critical Race Theory and Social Transitioning of Children in Texas schools" and securing "billions in funding for border security initiatives as a member of our Appropriations Committee." He is also a pastor and small business owner.[6] As of November 2025, Toth's campaign website listed "Securing Our Southern Border," "Fighting Liberal Indoctrination," "Our National Security," among his top priorities.
As of November 2025, The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, Inside Elections with Nathan Gonzales, and Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball each rated the general election Solid/Safe Republican.
Texas conducted redistricting between the 2024 and 2026 elections. As a result, district lines in this state changed. According to an Inside Elections analysis, under the old map, Donald Trump (R) would have won the district by 24 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. Under the new map, Trump would have won the district by 23 percentage points.
Also running in the primary are Martin Etwop (R), T.C. Manning (R), Nicholas Plumb (R), and Ava Zolari (R).
If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff on May 26.

From Hollywood, Etwop moved to the San Francisco Area where he got married, raised a family, and worked at Tesla 12 a day in steel-toe boots, while also attending law school at night. He kept with his missionary work even there in the San Francisco area before moving to Conroe Texas.
With two girls, 6 and 8, and a now-5-months old son, Martin saw how far America was falling, and having come from a country that President Trump once rightly called "a shithole country", he could see the same things he experienced in Uganda starting to creep in and even be advocated for by the liberal left, things such as socialism, lawlessness, snatch and grab etcetera. Martin did not wish as he puts it for "his children to grow up in Uganda in America."
"With our current stupidity in spending, borrowing trillions of dollars from our greatest nemesis the Chinese Communist Party, or leaders are mortgaging our children's future to the CCP. And it is not us who will pay for this stupidity. It is our children and grandchildren. I will not let that happen"- Defend the unborn. America is a land of opportunity and land where we all strive for life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, the left believe that the unborn child does not deserve to be given the chance to pursue their life and liberty. When our congressional representatives vote down the Born-Alive Abortion Survivor Protection Act, then you know how broken our society is. May God have mercy on us.
- Protect our borders and reimagine our immigration system. A nation cannot be sovereign without a border. So, to take back our nation we must protect our borders, by completing Trump's wall, supporting our border patrol officers by providing them all the equipment they need to enforce border security. That also includes giving them the respect and honor due from our president and senior government officials. We also need a moratorium on new admissions to the United States until the border issue is fixed. Immigration to the United States should be based on merit and the needs of the country, not on familial relationships and not even from the desires of big corporation to bring in foreign employers in order to avoid paying fellow Americans a
- End our out-of-control spending. We need a balanced budget Amendment; no additional raising of the debt limit and we need to scrap non-essential federal departments such as the IRS and the department of education (Education is a state issue so we should give education back to the States)
Another issue I am passionate about is Critical Race Theory. We cannot be teaching hate (CRT) claiming it to be teaching history. How can a nation survive when our children are being taught from as early as 5 years old that their classmate and best friend are the cause of the problems they ever had or will ever have, just because of the color of their skin?
As shown above, I am also very passionate about border security and immigration, being an immigrant myself.
Tax reform, we need that immediately. We should repeal the 16th Amendment (Income Tax Amendment) and instead only have a consumption tax or the fair tax. We shouldn't tax people for working, living or breathing, but rather only tax people's consumption.
Proud to be American
Stands for American families and people
Has a set of moral laws that they follow
This man and his family are true American heroes.
Additionally, I will only support bills that call for the lowering of Federal employees to pre-2020 levels.

Campaign website
Etwop's campaign website stated the following:
| “ |
I am running to restore the foundation on which America was built, based on Judeo-Christian principles, individual liberties, personal responsibility, and an honorable work ethic. Here is how I propose to do it: Impeach: I will push to impeach President Biden for his role in the recent death of our warriors in Afghanistan. Taxes: If Americans must be taxed, they deserve a tax where they are only taxed on what they purchase, not on the income they earn. The consumption tax. This will simplify our convoluted tax system, and in fact, it will even help us get rid of all the unnecessary IRS audits and the IRS itself. That is the tax system that I propose and support. Stand up to false liberal narratives: I will stand up as a minority against the false narratives of AOC, the squad, and the liberal democrats who constantly lie to the American that republicans are racist bigots who don’t care. Fiscal responsibility: I will work with like-minded Americans in Congress to return America to fiscal responsibility through controlled spending. Our national debt has become unbearable, and unfortunately, our children will be made to pay for the current reckless spending. We have to save our children’s futures by going back to responsible spending. Socialism: I will vehemently oppose socialism, Marxism and the the liberal leftist re-distribution of wealth doctrine that stands against our American work ethics, the ethics that built the greatest nation on the planet. It is common knowledge that socialism and Marxism breeds anarchy and chaos, and we cannot accept a system that calls for destruction of other people’s livelihoods and life. Defending the unborn: Life begins at conception. “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb I knew you.” I will stand for and defend the life of the unborn and fight to take away from Biden and Pelosi the power to fund abortions with tax-payer money. Individual liberties: There can never be a pursuit of life liberty and happiness without protecting our religious liberty, freedom of choice, and free speech. I will stand to protect our liberties. Additionally I will ensure that we get rid of section 230 which gives big tech an unfettered free ride to monetize, police and suppress American freedoms without any kind of accountability. It is time for big tech to start being held for their role in the current rot and RIBs culture in America today. Police, veterans and the military: I will stand with our men and women in uniform, whom the Democrats have and continue to demonize for doing the toughest job in the world. Our borders: A nation’s sovereignty begins with how it protects its borders. I will fight to reinforce our borders by completing the wall, installing hi-tech border monitoring equipment, hiring more border patrol officers, and protecting against illegal immigration and lawlessness. Second Amendments: The defense of ones life, family and home is the most important responsibility an individual has. I will fight to ensure that every American who wants to is able to exercise their second amendment rights. Education: Quality education for our children is a fundamental right. I will advocate and ensure that school choice is available to all Americans, and will legislate the elimination of liberal indoctrination of our K-12 children, and ban the teaching of critical race theory (CRT) in our schools. Instead of CRT, I will propose the teaching of financial literacy in all schools.[10] |
