I am the son of a teacher and a working mom who instilled in me the importance of education and integrity. I began my path to public service at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I obtained a degree with a double major in Political Science and Philosophy.

I went on to attend the University of North Carolina School of Law. During that time I interned/clerked with a public defender’s office, the Supreme Court of North Carolina, the North Department of Justice and UNC’s Civil Legal Clinic.

I began my legal career as a public defender in Buncombe County and represented adult and juvenile clients in both district and superior courts. I was promoted to a supervisory role and mentored new attorneys and served as office representative on several boards and justice initiatives.

Seeking civil experience, I joined one of Western North Carolina’s largest law firms and focused on litigation, gaining experience in commercial, employment and land use work in state, federal, and appellate courts.

I now run my own law firm and in 2022 became the only Democrat to win a Republican held county commission seat in the State of North Carolina that election cycle.
  • I am committed to rule of law and equal justice for all.
  • I have both appellate and trial level experience.
  • Extremism has no place in our courts. Judges should decide cases on the merits and operate independent of partisan agendas.
Judges are entrusted with the responsibility of assuring that cases are decided on the merits and do not directly shape policy.

That said, I believe our constituents should understand their judicial candidates’ experiences, backgrounds, and values to gain insight on how they view the world as well as their ability to render just and impartial decisions.

I have served on non-profit boards and volunteered as pro bono counsel for domestic violence survivors seeking legal protection.

As a Commissioner, I have been committed to education, public safety, and policies that improve quality of life for all residents. I have served as Chair of our County’s Early Childhood Education Committee and our Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.
As a current elected official, I have focused on integrity, justice, and transparency as key qualities. One of the benefits of serving in a legislative capacity is that I understand the importance of public trust.

As a member of an elected Commission, the public trusts that we will make decisions that benefit our entire community and reasonably expect to understand our policy choices. That trust is earned through establishing a record of sound decisions and clear communication with the community we serve. Our votes are public and the research, inquiries, and diligence we conduct are on display for the public to see real time.

Similarly, judges are entrusted to make critical decisions about our daily lives and to apply the law with integrity, equality, and the Constitution at the forefront of their minds. Our judicial proceedings are not as accessible or transparent as the typical legislative session or commission meeting, so it is important that we elect candidates who are accustomed to being direct and candid about their values, beliefs, and what drives their decision-making.

The people of North Carolina deserve judges who are present and willing to be transparent about their beliefs. I will bring the integrity driven, transparent approach that I have demonstrated on Commission to the bench.
The Court of Appeals hears cases across numerous areas of law, from serious criminal matters to complex civil cases, so I believe it is critical for successful appellate judges to have experience at both the trial and appellate levels.

As a litigator, I have both appellate and trial experience. I have worked in private practice on complex civil cases in both state and federal courts. As a mediator, I have helped parties resolve employment, real estate, and business disputes. I previously served as a public defender and understand that justice should not depend on how much money you have in your pocket.

As a Commissioner, I gained invaluable policy experience and have served on legislative and quasi-judicial boards/commissions.
