Martin E. Stone is a judge on the Coos County Circuit Court in Oregon. The court has jurisdiction over Coos County and is located within the 15th Judicial District. He was elected to the court in 1998.[1][2]

Stone won re-election to a fourth consecutive term without opposition in the primary election on May 17, 2016.

Judges of the Oregon Supreme Court, Oregon Court of Appeals and Oregon Circuit Courts are all selected in an identical manner. They are chosen in nonpartisan elections to serve six-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving.[3]

The chief judges of the circuit courts are appointed by the chief justice of the state supreme court to serve a two-year term.[3]

Qualifications
To serve on the circuit court, a judge must be:[3]

  • a U.S. citizen;
  • a state resident for at least three years;
  • a resident of his or her circuit for at least one year;
  • a state bar member; and
  • under the age of 75.

2010

Stone was re-elected to the Coos County Circuit Court in 2010 after running unopposed. He received 98.92 percent of the vote.[4]

Education

Stone graduated from Myrtle Point High School in 1970. He earned his B.A. from Willamette University in 1974. In 1977 he received his J.D. from the University of Oregon.[5]

Career

Stone has also served as counsel for Coquille Valley Hospital, Port of Bandon, Myrtle Point School District, Security Bank and Coos Curry Federal Credit Union.[5]
