Marty J. Jackley (Republican Party) is the Attorney General of South Dakota. He assumed office on January 2, 2023. His current term ends on January 4, 2027.

Jackley (Republican Party) is running for election to the U.S. House to represent South Dakota's At-Large Congressional District. He declared candidacy for the general election scheduled on November 3, 2026.[source]

Jackley was the 30th attorney general of South Dakota from 2009 to 2019. A Republican, he was appointed to the position by Governor Mike Rounds (R) on August 14, 2009, to fill the vacancy left by Larry Long who had been appointed to the Second Judicial Circuit Court. Jackley was sworn into office on September 4, 2009, and was elected to a full term in 2010.[1] He served until January 2019.

Jackley was a Republican candidate for governor of South Dakota. He lost the primary on June 5, 2018.

Biography

Marty J. Jackley earned a high school diploma from Sturgis High School in 1988. Jackley earned a bachelor's degree from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1992 and a law degree from the University of South Dakota in 1995. His career experience includes working as a partner with Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson & Ashmore, LLP; a special assistant attorney general with the state of South Dakota, and a United States attorney with the South Dakota United States Attorney's Office.[2][3]

Jackley was appointed attorney general of South Dakota by Governor Mike Rounds on August 14, 2009, filling the vacancy left by Larry Long. Long resigned after he was appointed to the Second Judicial Circuit Court. Jackley was sworn into office on September 4, 2009.[2] He served until January 2019.
