Mary Ann Claytor was born in Cabin Creek, West Virginia, and lives in St. Albans, West Virginia. She earned a B.S.B.A. in accounting from West Virginia State College and an M.A. in religion from Liberty University. Claytor’s career experience includes working as a compliance and financial auditor for over 20 years with the West Virginia State Auditor's Office.[1][2]

Claytor ran for state auditor of West Virginia in 2016. She defeated Robin Righter and Jason Pizatella in the May 10 primary election and competed in the November 8 general election with state Rep. John B. McCuskey (R)—who was unopposed for his party's nomination—and Libertarian Brenton Ricketts.

Claytor's campaign website pointed to her hands-on experience as a freelance auditor as a qualification for the office of state editor. It also stated her support for increasing government transparency, continuing to improve customer service in the state auditor's office, and "bridging the gap between local and state governments."[8]
