Mary Barthelson was born in Arlington, Virginia. She earned both a bachelor’s and graduate degree from George Mason University in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Barthelson’s career experience includes working as a systems engineer, specializing in security systems.[1]

Mary Barthelson is an accomplished systems engineer with a strong commitment to community service and human rights. She holds a bachelors and masters degree in systems engineering from George Mason University. With nearly a decade of experience working with cutting-edge technology in the space industry, coupled with several years of experience in security technology, such as biometrics and body cameras, she has established herself as a skilled and versatile engineer. She presently serves as a Principal Systems Engineer at SAIC, where she designs the architecture of space systems. Apart from her work, Mary is known for her advocacy for the unhoused and low-income families in Fairfax County, promoting STEM education, and supporting the resettlement of refugees. Her efforts include starting a STEM club at Forest Edge elementary school to teach children about robotics. She has entered the 2023 Virginia House of Delegates race to represent district 7 on a platform to reduce housing insecurity, ensure access to mental health services, and address the challenges and opportunities presented by technology.
  • Mary is committed to ensuring that every family, whether a young family looking to buy their first home or a retiree wanting to age in place, has a safe and secure place to call home. She will use data collected on housing needs and collaborate with local advocates to ensure community input in planning, staying ahead of changing needs.
  • Mary will establish a mobile mental health unit in Reston to improve the response time of emergency mental health services, which are currently operating out of Merrifield.
  • Mary will use her expertise as a systems engineer to ensure legislation keeps up with the changing pace of technology whether that be on matters of sustainable energy, stem education, data privacy, or information integrity.
I am passionate about technology and human rights. That is why I chose to go into systems engineering as a profession and spend so much time in the community working to improve the lives of those in need.

When I was a Systems Engineering student at George Mason, I learned how to utilize data to design the best solutions to problems. Policy making is becoming increasingly data driven, which means we need policy makers who understand it. My education and work experience as an engineer has prepared me to serve the community I have called home my whole life. I grew up in Fairfax, where I attended Providence Elementary School. My family then moved to Haymarket where I attended Battlefield High School’s STEM program. As a member of their internationally awarded robotics team, I collaborated with and built consensus between individuals with different perspectives and skill sets to bring home success. The mentorship of my teachers inspired me to obtain my master’s degree and use my knowledge to help others. Since graduation, I have worked on a multitude of projects and systems in the private sector. I am committed to using my expertise to solve the challenges we face.

I am passionate about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to receive a quality education, protecting our environment, criminal justice reforms, and technology related policies.
I look up to my mom. She has always embodied both strength and kindness. She taught me to always work hard and not shy away from challenges.
It’s important for elected officials to be receptive to their constituents and take their wishes into consideration. Legislators should not be unilateral decision makers.
The first historical event I remember was the 2000 presidential election. My elementary school had a mock election. I don’t recall who won, but I found the whole thing to be very exciting as all the students waited to hear the results. I think I voted for Bush because I liked his name better. Without any understanding of political parties and policies that seemed like sound logic in my 7 year old brain. If only the world were as simple a place as it is to kids.
My first job was washing and bagging vegetables at my dad’s farm as a preteen. We would sell them on the weekends at the farmer’s market in Fairfax. I remember getting my first paycheck at $5.15 an hour and thinking I was rich. I did that for a few years before getting a job as an engineering intern in high school.
I would want to be Khaleesi from Game of Thrones. We can pretend Season 7 didn’t happen.
I think there are pros and cons with experienced and new legislators. Experienced legislators have more of the historical knowledge and existing relationships. New legislators have to build that but can bring fresh ideas and new skill sets. Even the most experienced legislators were new at one point. I think a general assembly that has a balance between both would be the strongest.
The top three committees I have interest in are Communications, Technology and Innovation, Agriculture Chesapeake and Natural Resources, and Education.
Danica Roem and Jennifer Wexton are among my favorite legislators. They are two strong Virginia women whose leadership I admire and look to embody.
