March 7, 2011

Colorado: The Colorado Women's Bar Association announced that Judge Mary A. Celeste will be the 2011 recipient of the Mary Lathrop Award. It will be awarded at the annual convention in June. Mary Lathrop was the first woman to open a law office in the state of Colorado, the first woman to argue in front of the Colorado Supreme Court, the first woman admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court and the first female member of the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations.[1]

Celeste has been identified by the association as an trailblazer for the state courts. Upon joining the Denver County Court in 2000, she became the first openly gay female judge in the state. Eight years after her appointment, she became the first woman to serve as presiding judge of that court. She was retained to the court in November 2010 to another four-year term.[1]
