II grew up on a dairy farm in central Minnesota, picking rocks and hauling hay bales with my eight brothers and two sisters. I graduated from St. Cloud State College, got married to Ted and soon after joined VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) serving in rural Kentucky for nearly three years. We worked with a group of low income citizens to replace the commodity program with the food stamp program, improving the lives of many people who lived there. I worked as a group home counselor in the Bronx, Chicago, and Washington, DC for the next five years. When I had twin sons (Tad and Josh) and my husband landed a job working for Legal Services in Albert Lea, Minnesota, we settled down. I began teaching, and we adopted my daughter Tess. I became the Director of the Albert Lea Area Learning Center, a program to help kids in danger of dropping out of high school, to make and follow through on a plan to get caught up and to earn their diploma. I loved helping kids to accomplish this goal and move on to new challenges. I completed my teaching career at Fountain Centers Adolescent Program, a school for kids placed in our school district who were struggling with problems of chemical dependency. Upon retirement, I volunteered as a reading buddy for kindergarteners and first graders and worked with English language learners until COVID arrived and volunteering stopped. And now I am running for office.
  • I am a defender of public education. I think we need to help kids from PreK through college so that they can reach their full potential and lead full lives. I think schools should be fully funded and class sizes should be small enough so that each child gets the help they need to understand and learn.
  • I am an advocate for working families, and that means from young families starting out to senior citizens retiring with dignity. Some of the policies I advocate are access to health care for all, a guarantee of access to safe and legal reproductive services, access to quality and affordable daycare, paid family leave, a living wage, support for unions, supports for senior citizens who want to age in place in their homes, and an increased Medicaid reimbursement so seniors get quality care in nursing homes and other care facilities.
  • I am concerned about climate change. The district I would represent in Southern Minnesota is rural. I would work to help incentivize programs so farmers can better adapt to extremes of weather, maintain healthy soil and water reserves, and still be able to stay in business.
I am most passionate about education, especially early childhood education. Education was my life's work. I have learned through study and experience that the best investment we can make is two fold. Help young families so that they can take good care of their children and help them to get off on a good start. This means we need to ensure there is a living wage, access to health care, access to quality, affordable daycare, nutrition programs, safe housing, and paid family leave.

Also, we need to invest in early childhood programs so that kids have every opportunity to develop academically and socially. We know that it is the right thing to do for our kids and it is the smart thing to do for our country. Kids who are enrolled in quality preK programs are healthier, do better in school, graduate and go to college at higher rates, and lead more productive lives. It is time to make this investment.
