Candidacy challenged
A lawsuit was filed alleging that Mary Hotard Becnel and opponent Mona Joseph had "irregulatiries...on [their] qualifying forms."[6] The suit was filed by Melanie L. Trosclair, noted simply as "a qualified elector" on the petition, and it was filed on her behalf by the law firm of Rob Snyder. Snyder was also running for the St. John the Baptist Parish judgeship.[7] Retired judge Michael Kirby ruled to disqualify Joseph's candidacy, but dismissed the challenge against Becnel.
Education
Becnel received her undergraduate degree from the University of New Orleans and her J.D. in 1980 from Loyola University School of Law. She has also studied toward her master's degree at the National Judicial College.[8]
Career
Becnel began her career as a court reporter and became a private practice lawyer following her graduation from law school in 1980. She was elected to the district court in 1993. She has also served temporarily as an ad hoc judge for other courts, including the First Circuit Court of Appeal. She ran unsuccessfully for a Supreme Court judgeship in 2001.[8][9]
