Mary Margaret Haugen
Mary Margaret Haugen (b. January 14, 1941) is a former Democratic member of the Washington State Senate, representing District 10 from 1993 to 2013. Previously, she served in the Washington House of Representatives from 1982 to 1992. Haugen's political experience began with her service as a board member for Stanwood School District 401 from 1972 to 1984.[1]
Haugen attended Mount Vernon Beauty School from 1959 to 1960. Haugen was the owner and operator of Mary Margaret's Beauty Salon from 1972 to 1994.[2]

Haugen ran for re-election in the 2012 election for Washington State Senate District 10. Haugen was unopposed in the August 7 blanket primary election and was defeated by Barbara Bailey (R) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[4][5]

The Freedom Foundation releases its Big Spender List annually. The Institute ranks all Washington legislators based on their total proposed tax and fee increases. To find each legislator’s total, the Institute adds up the 10-year tax increases or decreases, as estimated by Washington’s Office of Financial Management, of all bills sponsored or co-sponsored by that legislator.[7]

Haugen proposed a 10-year increase in state taxes and fees of $777.2 million, the 11th highest amount of proposed new taxes and fees of the 46 Washington state senators on the Freedom Foundation’s 2012 Big Spender List.[8]
