Mary McLaughlin was federal judge with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She joined the court in 2000 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). McLaughlin assumed senior status for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on November 18, 2013. McLaughlin retired from the court on July 1, 2020.[1]

McLaughlin also served on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. Her term on the surveillance court started on May 18, 2008, and ended on May 18, 2015.[2]

Early life and education

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, McLaughlin graduated from Gwynedd-Mercy College with her bachelor's degree in 1968 and from Bryn Mawr College with her master's degree in 1969. McLaughlin went on to obtain her J.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1976.[1]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Pennsylvania

McLaughlin was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania by President Bill Clinton on March 9, 2000, to a seat vacated by Judge Marvin Katz as Katz assumed senior status. McLaughlin was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 24, 2000, and received commission on May 31, 2000.[3] On November 18, 2013, McLaughlin retired from full-time service of the court and took senior status.[1]

Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court

McLaughlin also concurrently serves on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. She was appointed on May 18, 2008 and her term ended on May 18, 2015.[2]
