Mary Sheffield (Michigan)
Mary Sheffield is the Mayor of Detroit in Michigan. She assumed office on January 1, 2026. Her current term ends on January 1, 2030.
Sheffield ran for election for Mayor of Detroit in Michigan. She won in the general election on November 4, 2025.
While mayoral elections in Detroit are nonpartisan, Sheffield is a Democrat.[1][2]
Biography
Sheffield was born in Detroit, Michigan. She earned a bachelor's degree from Wayne State University and a master's degree from Central Michigan University.[3]Her professional experience includes working as a financial aid advisor and international program coordinator for the Wayne County Community College District, a program specialist in the Wayne County Jails, and an ordained minister.[4] [3] In November 2013, Sheffield was the youngest person ever elected to the Detroit City Council.[4] In January 2022, members of the Detroit City Council elected Sheffield City Council President.[5]

The city of Detroit, Michigan, held elections for mayor, city council, city clerk, and the Detroit Board of Police Commisisoners on November 7, 2017. A primary election was held on August 8, 2017. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was April 25, 2017.[6]
Incumbent Mary Sheffield defeated Jewel Ware in the general election for District 5 on the Detroit City Council.[7]
