Mary Wenger was appointed the interim head of the Audits Division of the Oregon Secretary of State in November 2015, making her the Oregon Auditor upon the retirement of Gary Blackmer. Blackmer announced in late October 2015 that he would retire at the end of 2015. Wenger was appointed to replace him until 2017, when the Secretary of State chose Kip Memmott as permanent auditor.[1][2]

Per chapter 177.170 of the Oregon Statutes, which stipulates, "the Secretary of State shall designate one person employed by the Division of Audits of the Offices of the Secretary of State to be responsible for reports of waste, inefficiency or abuse received through the Government Waste Hotline or received by the secretary through any other method," Blackmer was selected to head the audits division by Kate Brown, who was the Oregon Secretary of State at the time of his appointment in June 2009.[3]
