The Judicial Update

March 14, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland: In an 84-47 vote, the Maryland House of Delegates approved pay increases of up to $14,500 for Maryland judges.[1] Starting in fiscal year 2014, Maryland judges will see pay increases of 3% annually, or about $14,000 over three years.[2] The increase is expected to cost the state $6.8 million. Maryland is currently facing a $1 billion budget shortfall. The General Assembly was under pressure to act, as a proposal from the Judicial Compensation Commission to increase the salaries by as much as 23% would have been implemented barring legislative action. In 2005, the House and Senate failed to agree on smaller raises, resulting in raises of $25,000 that took effect automatically.[3]
