Federal charges and resignation (2020)

On August 17, 2020, Charbonier Laureano was indicted and arrested for a kickback scheme in which she inflated an employee's salary in return for part of the money he received.[1] She resigned from office on August 20, 2020, effective September 15, 2020.[2]

In a letter sent to the Speaker of the House, Charbonier Laureano said, “I have to assume this responsibility and this will require time, commitment, a lot of effort and money. It is worth noting that this burden is not on you. I am calm, at peace, with a clear conscience. I came here to work and I did that with responsibility and determination.”[2]
