I am a husband, father, and small business owner. My family has been in this area for six generations.

I'm passionate about serving others, and am a member of our local Lions Club. I'm also involved at my home church, where I have been a lifelong member.

I am also serving in my third term on the Fort Atkinson City Council. During my tenure on the council, we have come up with a plan to fix our streets, which used to be in horrible condition. I also helped spearhead the creation of an Economic Development Commission.

I am running because Wisconsin's state government has been too hyper-partisan and divided over the past decade. We can do better, but that requires a change in leadership and a re balancing of our state's current divided government. We also need to work towards fair maps for fairer elections.

  • Wisconsin needs to be a welcome place that attracts and retains young talent. We also need to do better by our young families. This means ensuring wages keep up with cost of living, and quality job opportunities are available.
  • Education funding needs to be fixed. Our public schools are hindered by multiple problems, including a problematic Open Enrollment system, as well as a need to go to public referendum repeatedly, just to maintain service already being provided.
  • Our state is begging for comprehensive tax reform. Wisconsin's property taxes are too high, but that is because local communities and school districts are forced to rely on property taxes for almost all of their revenue.
I am very passionate about infrastructure. We need to fix what we have, before approving new projects. This means coming up with sustainable long term funding solutions, not just kicking the can down the road and furthering unsustainable debt.

Further, I also care deeply about the availability of quality healthcare options for our residents. We have quality providers, but too many people do not have access to decent insurance. Many people who have insurance pay high premiums or unrealistic deductibles. Wisconsin should participate in the federal medicaid expansion.
I look up to my parents and my fellow city council members.

As far as following someone politically, Robert La Follette was one of the most influential leaders in Wisconsin's state history. I read a biography about him not too long, "The Education of an Anti-Imperialist". While a thick read, I learned many things about this important state figure that I did not know before. "Fighting Bob" believed that our state government could be run to make lives better for all residents, namely by investing in education. Unfortunately, some politicians today have forgotten his legacy.
I think one of the most critical abilities for any elected official to possess is to not only "listen" to constituents, but actually hear what they're saying. This ties into having integrity as well as political accountability.

One other thing that is so important is the ability to compromise. Too much of our politics today has become about winning "all or nothing." If I can reach across the aisle to move everyone forward, that is something I'm more than willing to do.
I would hope someday, many years from now, I would be remembered as someone who cared deeply about their community, and tried to do right by everyone he represented. I think it is on every generation to leave a place a little bit better for the ones who followed.
Probably the Challenger explosion when I was still five years old. I was in kindergarten at the time. It was a national tragedy, that I think made an impact on most people who remember it.
My very first job was working at one of my parents' restaurants, when I was 14 years old. I worked there throughout high school. I'll admit, I wasn't excited about working when I was that age, but I gradually became good at it. I learned the values of showing up on time, communicating clearly, working as a team, and being a hard worker. Today, after spending years in other positions, I am part of the family business. I help with hiring, payroll, marketing, and still fill in at our restaurant locations when needed.
I have always loved the song "Handrwritten" by the Gaslight Anthem. The writing is open and honest, and the lyrics can be connected to many different aspects of life, whether its creating something, or maintaining a personal relationship.
Our state senate districts are quite large. The one I reside in is split between six fairly disparate counties. As a contrast, the state assembly district I am running in covers portions of three counties. While still a challenge, it makes it easier to meet with constituents and listen to their concerns.
I do believe it is beneficial. Having experience in local government, I understand that people of different backgrounds and views can indeed work together. We also have a firm understanding of how to find compromise, to the benefit of our residents.
Our state is facing a demographic time bomb that we need to come to grips with. Families are getting smaller, and many young people are leaving our state for better opportunities. We need to stop obsessing with keeping wages down, and make this a place where young talent wants to stay and thrive long term.

On the other end of the spectrum, we are a state that still provides quality healthcare and residence options to folks in their golden years. While this is a good thing, we will soon be a state with not enough workers to support such a challenging residential base.

We can't cut our way to prosperity. We need to reinvest now in the things that college grads and young families want: Quality education, quality healthcare, quality infrastructure, and quality standard of living.
It should be a partnership interested in working out solutions to our state's unique challenges. Unfortunately, our current state legislature decided to start off the relationship with Gov. Evers on a bad note, with the "Lame Ducks Session" which occurred before he was even sworn into office. This move received widespread condemnation, but Evers' outgoing predecessor still signed off on it, as a parting shot. The current legislature needs to be held to account for their cavalier disregard for the will of the people.
Absolutely! I am good friends with a former state representative who still talks to his former colleagues, from both parties. We have to remember that while the other side may disagree with us, they are not the enemy. Further, working with legislators from other areas of the state can bring new perspectives to the threads that bind us together, and lead to creative solutions that benefit everyone.
There are probably too many to list here, but I would be strongly interested in serving on Committees for Campaigns & Elections, Education, Government Accountability & Oversight, Local Government, and Transportation. I would also of course be interested in eventually serving on the Joint Finance Committee, as well as the Joint Employment Relations Committee.
I am not running for office as a stepping stone to any future elected position. I see myself staying in Wisconsin for the long term future.
Increasing options for affordable workforce housing has become a personal crusade for me, due to many stories I have heard from local residents about how difficult it is to find a decent rental that fits within their budget. When I hear residents tell me, "I need to find a place by next week, otherwise my kids and I will be living in our car," that is something that moves me to try and address the situation.
