Ballotpedia:Trial Courts

The District Courts are trial courts in Massachusetts that have jurisdiction over most criminal cases, including felonies punishable by less than five years, small claims involving less than $7,000, civil cases involving less than $25,000. The courts also hear juvenile, mental health, and housing cases.[1] Most counties in the state have multiple district courts.[2][3]

In Massachusetts, district court judges are appointed by the governor with help from a nominating commission and confirmed by the Governor's Council. They serve until age 70. District court judges receive temporary assignments to specific geographic jurisdictions, and those assignments may change over time.[4]
