The Renewable Energy Initiative was a state statute initiated by citizens that did not make the Massachusetts ballot on November 8, 2016.

The measure would have required electricity suppliers to increase the minimum electricity percentage from renewable energy generating sources by 1 percent each year until 2019, then by an additional 2 percent each year until 2029, and then by an additional 3 percent each year after that.[1]

This proposed law would require retail electricity suppliers to increase the minimum percentage of electricity from designated renewable energy generating sources that they provide to end-use customers by 1% each year until December 31, 2019; then by an additional 2% each year until December 31, 2029; and by an additional 3% each year thereafter.

The proposed law would also amend the state’s renewable and alternative energy and energy efficiency goals by requiring that at least 20% of the state’s electric load requirements be met through new, renewable, and alternative energy generation by 2020; that 40% of the load be met through such sources by 2030; that 70% of the load be met through such sources by 2040, and that 100% of the load be met through such sources by 2050.[2]

Supporters had until December 2, 2015, to submit at least 64,750 valid signatures. The initiative did not meet the required amount of signatures to be put before the Legislature.[4]
