Career
Matt Arnold's organization Clear the Bench Colorado evaluates judicial performance in an effort to educate voters in judicial retention elections. In 2010, according to the Colorado Independent, Arnold "railed at Tea Party gatherings across the state against the liberal leanings of the state’s Supreme Court justices." The paper also noted that, in 2011, Arnold ran for the position of chair for the Republican Party of Colorado; he lost the campaign to Ryan Call.[1]
In an October 2014 column for the Colorado Statesman, Arnold outlined his opposition to the state's Commission on Judicial Performance, which rates the state's judges and disseminates a "blue book" report. Arnold criticized the group, saying that the reports "fail to provide much, if any, substance behind the published recommendations, which almost uniformly are in favor of 'retaining' judicial incumbents in office."[2] Arnold's group, by contrast, aims to evaluate judicial actions "on the basis of the Colorado Constitution, established statutory law, legal precedent, & 'rule of law' principles."[3] In a reply to Arnold's column, Rebecca Kourlis, a former justice of the Colorado Supreme Court noted that for Arnold's organization "the key question is one of ideological agreement or disagreement with the outcome of select cases of particular interest to his organization."[4]
