Campaign themes

2014

Lathrop's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

Real Property Tax Relief

  • Excerpt: "Matt will fight to help homeowners with property tax relief. Prioritizing the state budget with the goal of sensible and responsible spending and elimination of waste will help all tax payers. When we focus on important and essential state spending, we can reduce spending and get relief to property owners in the form of tax credits."

Holding the Line on Spending

  • Excerpt: "The state budget is a statement of our priorities. Matt will look closely at the budget to ensure that it reflects Nebraska’s priorities and the business of important and essential state government. He will fight to eliminate wasteful spending and inefficiencies in government."

Preparing Our Children to Succeed

  • Excerpt: "Education of the next generation of workers and job-creators is essential to Nebraska’s long-term economic strength. We need to support the teachers in the classroom who are developing tomorrow’s workforce, and the principals and school board members who are solving the education challenges. Strong local control with the flexibility to adapt to specific challenges is the best way to effectively and efficiently teach our children."

Ending the Social Security Tax

  • Excerpt: "Matt will fight hard to correct Nebraska’s burdensome tax on Social Security retirement benefits. Retired Nebraskans worked a lifetime and kept their end of the bargain to contribute to the economy and give up part of their paycheck to provide for retirement. Nebraska’s tax on these benefits changes that bargain. It needs to be fixed."

Standing for Our Veterans

  • Excerpt: "Matt believes that Nebraska has a solemn duty to support all of our veterans. Support of programs which help those returning from active duty return to civilian life, find work and obtain the necessary care is the least we can do. Many veterans of earlier conflicts also need our support with housing and healthcare. Matt will work to honor their sacrifices."
