Professionally, I'm a retired firefighter/paramedic and a lifelong learner. I returned to school as an adult learner to the University of Akron, School of Law and earned a law degree. As an attorney I help victims of violent crime and I'm also a Green City Council member. Most importantly, I'm a married to Cindy Hulse and I'm a father of 5, three boys of my own and two girls of my wife's. I enjoy road cycling and I learned to be a pretty good cook during my time as a firefighter.
  • Jobs, jobs, jobs. I'm going to Columbus to protect and increase the number of good paying jobs and expand worker's rights and protections.
  • The Environment, we need to be a leader in attracting good paying jobs that improve our environment.
  • Equality, unfortunately, here we are in 2020 and were still talking about the wage gap between men and women. Its time to close that gap and all the gaps that divide us as Ohioans.
I'm personally passionate about protecting and attracting good paying jobs and making sure health care is both available and affordable for everyone.
I look up to my mother. She is a perfect example of someone who is intelligent, caring, and generous. She taught me to think for myself, she taught me that positions of influence come with great responsibility.
Honesty is the most important characteristic. Elected officials quickly lose credibility if they are not honest or exaggerate their experience or credentials.
To listen to their constituents and draft legislation that makes the lives of their constituents better.
When it comes to memory of a historical event, I was 14 years old sitting in high school shop class when an announcement came over the P.A,. President Ronald Reagan was shot. I remember a stream of thoughts and questions running through my head, anger, outrage, confusion, and some fear. We were immediately released from school to join our families and make sense of such a senseless act.
My very first job was when I was 15 years old dishwashing at a local restaurant.
I think the main importance why there are two legislative chambers is to have an additional check on the legislative process. it increases the likelihood that legislation that gets passed is bi-partisan.
I do think that previous experience in government or politics matters for State legislators. For one, a good understanding of statutory interpretation is necessary and can only come with study like that in law school or by experience having drafted or reviewed multiple proposed ordinances or resolutions like a local council member or mayor has done countless times. The Ohio Legislature, a body of lawmakers that pass laws that affect millions of people and often affect other State's laws is not the place for on the job training.
Ohio's greatest challenge over the next decade is to keep, retain and attract good paying jobs. This can be done by investing in and attracting manufacturing industries of the future, especially in green energy.
It is extremely beneficial to build relationships with other legislators, especially if you are going to accomplish goals for your constituents. Relationships help move the legislative process forward.
I would need to get in and see where I'm needed. We have excellent leadership right now and I'm not one to try to fix something that is not broken.
Stephen Dyer, Stephen Dyer is an education expert that served the House nearly a decade ago but still has enormous influence on Ohio education policy working across the isle helping to shape the best educational system for all Ohioans.
