Since 2017, Matt, along with his wife Elida and their children Clark and Rylee, has called Fort Mill, South Carolina, home. Over the past seven years, they have immersed themselves in the fabric of this quaint town, cherishing the friendships and memories woven into its tapestry. Fort Mill's nurturing environment has seen their children blossom into resilient, intelligent adults, owing much to the exemplary education provided by the local school district.

Matt's journey is one of academic excellence and professional growth. A graduate in Political Science from the University of Central Florida, he furthered his education with an MBA, graduating Magna Cum Laude. His 30-year career in Industrial Maintenance and Reliability has been marked by a relentless work ethic and a determination to excel. From humble beginnings as a data collection technician to his current role as a sought-after expert in his field, Matt's trajectory has been one of perseverance and achievement. Beyond his professional pursuits, Matt's commitment to service is unwavering. From his days as a Boy Scout to volunteering with organizations like the SPLC, his dedication to bettering his community has remained steadfast. In Fort Mill, he continues to serve as a pillar of support, lending his time and expertise to various community initiatives and events.

Among his proudest achievements is his involvement with the Rotary Club of Fort Mill, where he actively contributes to community service
  • South Carolina's Public Education System is ranked at the bottom in the United States. Thanks in part to political neglect and near constant attack from opportunistic outside influence, the greatest resource South Carolina has, our children, public education needs representatives that will work to rebuild this failing system.
  • As we have learned over the past decade, our Liberties and Freedoms cannot be taken for granted. Decisions by the Supreme Court have opened the door for oppressive changes to rights that have been taken for granted. From Women's Health Choices to Protections against Violence, intelligent, non-partisan, and modern solutions must be voiced and fought for in our State Government.
  • We all love living in a beautiful small town like Fort Mill. Unfortunately the rapid growth here has further burdened our crumbling infrastructure. Our roads are in shambles and we are seemingly experiencing daily water main breaks. We need representation who will fight for our tax dollars to come back to Fort Mill and fund infrastructure improvements beyond repairing damages.
Public education, securing our personal liberties & freedoms, & infrastructure.
Servant leadership! To be effective as an elected official you need to humble yourself in order to serve your constituents.
Proposing, writing, and/or enacting legislation that ensures all people can live free and independent lives.
Emotional Intelligence 2.0. It was a game changer for me in making necessary self-improvements to move my life in the right direction.
The governor should be working as an ally with the legislature to ensure the citizens of South Carolina are being properly provided for.
I think it is critical to build relationships with other legislators. No one is an island unto themselves. Bills get passed into laws when our elected officials work together. Not much get done when there is constant discord.
I have always admired Sen John McCain as a statesman, patriot, and human.
Transportation, Education, Utilities
I am a fiscal conservative who believes in full financial transparency at every level of our government.

My name is Matt Vilardebo and I am running for State House of Representatives because Fort Mill needs someone with experience fixing things. I've spent my career as an expert in fixing things and now I want to take that expertise to Columbia and fix our broken government!
  • We are going to hold the New Indy Paper Mill accountable for their pollution!
  • We are going to do the work necessary to lift South Carolina from the bottom of the barrel in public education. No more rhetoric it's time to pay our teachers, support our teachers, and recruit new teachers!
  • We are going to tirelessly advocate to bring state and federal dollars back to Fort Mill for necessary infrastructure improvements. Fort Mill is just a microcosm of the whole state: crumbling roads, no sidewalks, zero bike Lanes.
Education would certainly be one of those. My wife has been a public school teacher for over 20 years which has given me intimate and unique perspective on the life of a public school educator. I am also a huge proponent for medical cannabis and the decriminalization of cannabis. I have Parkinson's disease and having access to all my medical options would make this battle easier to fight.
My grandfather, my mother's father, is easily my most significant male influence. He was a Southern Baptist Minister and the kind of guy who put more emphasis on his deeds than his words. Never quit anger or speak a harsh word towards his fellow man my Papa Jones was the greatest person I ever knew!
Number one is compromise. We live in a world of polarized opinions that people confuse as fact. I feel like a vast majority of our elected officials are only interested in towing the party line. We represent a large constituency and while our party affiliation should serve as a guiding light for our decision making it should not be a set of blinders that causes us to lose sight of all the people we represent.
I remember being in 7th grade and standing out in the field at school and watching The Challenger explosion. It is probably the first time I can remember seeing all the adults crying and it taught me an important lesson in empathy and compassion.
I worked for my father's company from 15 to 38. He owned a small predictive maintenance engineering firm and that was my employment home for most my adult life.
I don't know if it's my favorite but it is certainly been the most beneficial to me during this stage in life. Emotional Intelligence 2.0 was instrumental in helping me raise my EQ which led to improved interactions in relationships with those around me.
Without a doubt it would be the Parkinson's diagnosis I received in 2020. My life is a daily battle with tremors, dystonia, and other symptoms. I have never let this disease limit me when I have very publicly shown folks that we don't need to be consigned to our illnesses. I am taking that passion and drive that I attack Parkinson's with and using it to fix our broken government.
I personally feel things are a bit backwards in those relationships and our modern times. Legislature, as the true representatives of the constituency, should be the guiding voice on policy for the governor. Instead we have a governor who's manipulating policy in the legislature.
The state has been controlled by a single party for several decades now and during that time education has stayed in the bottom 40. Government employees are not getting good faith raises and teachers are leaving the state by the dozens.
Even though I am a Democrat I've never sought a world where my party controls all branches of government across the country. Unicameral legislature tends to lead to stagnation and an inability to plan for the future.
Absolutely not! For too long this country has been controlled by politicians who are either attorneys or businessmen. As an engineer I am proud to bring my experience in that industry to the state capital. I'm an expert in fixing things and I look forward to fixing a broken government!
Absolutely, the most effective legislators are the ones who build relationships on both sides of the aisle. One of my skills that makes me uniquely qualified is my ability to build relationships with people and work on real compromises that will benefit the group.
Fortunately our state agreed to some new District maps which are more fairly drawn and will provide minority communities and opportunity to have true representation in the state government. We cannot keep gerrymandering districts so one party can keep control.
I've always looked at John McCain as one of my influences. Senator McCain, though not a part of my chosen political party, was a legislator for his constituents. He consistently sought compromise and was known for reaching across the aisle to achieve this.
This is a tough one to give a real answer to. My Parkinson's Disease makes it difficult to predict the future beyond a year or two. But if my health holds up I would like to serve for the next 6 to 8 years. Then I can hopefully transition to a career as a cabinet member or advisor.
Since education is one of my key issues I've heard many a heartbreaking story from every teacher I have talked to. They are all consistently disappointed with their elected officials who have turned their backs on them.
Absolutely, this is part of our system of checks and balances.
I absolutely believe compromise is necessary for policy making, particularly in a red state. I want to get things done once I'm elected and to do that compromise will most certainly need to happen.
