Matthew Bates is a judge for the Third Judicial District in Utah. He was appointed by Gov. Gary Herbert (R) on May 24, 2016, to fill the vacancy that was created by Charlene Barlow's resignation. Pending approval by the Utah State Senate, Bates joined the bench on July 1, 2016, when Barlow's resignation took effect.[1][2]
