Matthew William Brann is the chief judge on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 2012 after a nomination from President Barack Obama (D). Brann became chief judge in 2021.
Early life and education
A native of Elmira, New York, Brann graduated from the University of Notre Dame with his bachelor's degree in 1987 and from the Dickinson School of Law at Penn State University with his J.D. in 1990.[1]

On May 17, 2012, President Barack Obama nominated Brann to a seat on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania vacated by Thomas Vanaskie. The American Bar Association rated Brann Unanimously Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Brann's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 27, 2012, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on July 19, 2012. Brann was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on December 21, 2012, and he received his commission on December 27, 2012.[1][2][3]
Brann became chief judge in 2021.
