Biography

Matthew Bundy was born in Ogden, Utah. Bundy served in the U.S. Air Force from 1984 to 2004 and reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. He earned a B.A. from Weber State University in 1982, an M.A. from the University of Utah, and an Ed.S. from the University of Idaho. Bundy’s career experience includes working as a teacher and social studies department chair at Mountain Home High School.[1][2][3]

My family and I moved to Idaho over twenty years ago while I was still serving in the United States Air Force. We knew at once that we were home and this is where we wanted to raise our family and set down roots and build a future.

My beautiful wife and I are blessed with a wonderful daughter and two great sons. We also have the three most beautiful granddaughters any grandparent could have. All three children are married and we are truly blessed to have added three wonderful people to our family. I am proud of all my children. I am very proud as a father and a veteran that both of my sons have chosen to serve their country in the United States military. Both are currently members of the Army National Guard.

I enjoyed a career as a combat aviator in the United States Air Force. I have spent 16 years as a teacher at a great rural high school teaching, learning from and working with the future leaders of our communities. I have served on multiple community action groups that have been focused on community economic development and improving our cities infrastructure.

And finally, I have been honored to represent the great people of District 8A during the Sixty-Sixth Idaho Legislative Session.
  • Family is the reason for everything I do. My wife and I moved all over the country for most of my Air Force career. When we came to Idaho over 20 years ago, we felt at home and have raised our family here. We feel like our friends and neighbors have become family also. We raised three wonderful children in Mountain Home and all three graduated from Mountain Home High School and I look forward to watching my three beautiful grandchildren follow their path. I will protect the sanctity of life as a state legislator and I will do all I can to protect and nurture the family as the cornerstone of our great country.
  • Personal Liberty and Opportunity

    Ronald Reagan said it best in his first Inaugural Address and I want to share his thoughts with everyone.

    “If we look to the answer as to why, for so many years, we achieved so much, prospered as no other people on Earth, it was because here, in this land, we unleashed the energy and individual genius of man to a greater extent than has ever been done before. Freedom and the dignity of the individual have been more available and assured here than in any other place on Earth. The price for this freedom at times has been high, but we have never been unwilling to pay that price.”
  • Limited Government Our Founders understood the idea of giving government certain tasks and responsibilities and created a system that would limit the power and reach of government. I believe in limited government. As a state representative, I will legislate in a way that will protect local control.

I have always looked up to my father. He was a great man. He was a lifelong teacher and did great things for students in our home town.
I love the book "On Great Fields," by Ronald White. It is about a Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain. He was a religious leader, teacher, military leader, and elected official. All experiences that I have also had. he is a great role model.
Honesty, transparency and the ability to interact with other policy makers. Above all, listen to the people.
I am a problem solver. I am able to create lasting and successful relationships. Leadership.
As your state representative, I will protect your freedom and liberty and your individual right to choose your direction and achieve the success you deserve.
As a 20-year combat aviator veteran of the United States Air Force, I have spent my life committed to protecting the Constitution of the United States. I support the right of the individual to keep and bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Article I, Section 11 of the Idaho State Constitution. I stand to protect that right at every opportunity.
As an elementary school student, I remember the political situation that surrounded the Vietnam War.
I was a newspaper delivery boy when I was 12 years old. I have had a job ever since.
I listed "On Great Fields" earlier. I feel like I would have loved to have met Joshua Chamberlain.
As an educator in a rural Idaho high school for the past 16 years and City Councilman of Mountain Home, I have a firsthand view of our strengths and weaknesses. Our job as educators and legislators is to provide a path to success for our students as they will be the future of Idaho. After my time in the military, I have dedicated myself to serving the youth of my community.
Congenial. We are competing branches, so the check and balance must remain to ensure the best policy decisions for the people of Idaho.
Population growth and our need to update, modernize and maintain our infrastructure.
I totally believe that. We need to be able to exchange ideas and be able to discuss the proper path forward for legislation. The path to good public policy can be long and difficult. However, we should be ready to put in the work to best benefit our constituents.
The legislature should oversee and be a part of emergency powers.
An education funding bill that will be based on a per student funding. Weights will be added to make sure that rural districts and districts with other challenges will be able to adequately educate the students in their districts.
P0lice, Firefighters, past Governors, current Congressman, almost all agriculture industries and producers in Idaho, Idaho Right to Life and many more
House Appropriations, Education, and Commerce Committees.
As a member of the Idaho House Appropriations Committee, it is key that we continue to ensure a balanced and fiscally conservative budget. 100% transparency is vital.

We need to continue to include parents and community members in the process of developing an educational process that provides multiple paths to produce career ready students. Some of our students graduate from high school and pursue higher education, some go on to additional vocational training, some join the military and others go directly into the work force. Our job as educators and legislators is to provide a path to success for all these different options. I was selected the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) State of Idaho High School Civics Teacher of the year for 2020.

Education. We need to keep open the options for multiple paths to success for students in our public schools.

Water. Idaho must maintain the right to appropriate and manage water within its own borders.

Agriculture. Idaho must maintain a strong and viable agricultural industry as one of the most important cornerstones in the foundation of our state .

I really look up to my father. He was a career educator and I watched from a very early age his desire to give his students a patriotic look at our nation and he encouraged them to be active in the community and to give back to society.

I also admire Ronald Reagan. He was president when I was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force in 1984. It gives me a unique tie to him as the president and to that time in our history.
I have always been inspired by Teddy Roosevelt and his essay, "The Duties of American Citizenship." It contains my favorite quote that was first shown to me by my father and then again in the military.

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."
I would like to leave a legacy of service to my community, state and nation. I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve my nation in the military during periods of war and in maintaining the peace. I have served my community as a public educator and I have been involved in helping students reach their potential and to also reach for the stars. My community service has also included the great opportunity to serve as a city council member. I would love to serve as a member of the Idaho State House of Representatives and have that honor to stand beside all of the other opportunities I have received to serve my great country.
The Vietnam War dominated the news and conversations when I was in elementary school growing up. Whenever I think back about news events, that is what comes to mind.
I was a paperboy when I was about 12. I had my paper route for about two years. It was a great experience to run a small business at a young age and develop some great work habits.
I had a great childhood and as a young reader, I loved reading "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." My friends and I lived close to the mountains and we would try and recreate some of the more iconic escapades from the book. That book reminds me how great life can be and what good friends mean in our lives. So, I like to think I am what a grown up version of Tom Sawyer might be.
I believe it is beneficial, but not mandatory to have prior government experience. I spent 20 years as an officer and aviator in the United States Air Force. This time gave me great opportunities to learn about leadership, service and duty. As a high school teacher, I have had the chance to really get into educational policy and funding issues. This gives me a unique view into one of the primary functions of state government. I have also served locally on boards and committees that are involved in service, economic development and infrastructure. I have also had the opportunity to serve as a city council member. This has given me a great feel for what each level of government is best suited for and also how different levels of government can best partner.
Education Committee. With 16 years experience teaching at a rural high school, I bring a set of skills that are essential is understanding the educational process. I am committed to ensuring there are multiple different educational avenues available for students to achieve personal success academically and in the work force.

Transportation and Defense. State roads and highways are essential in maintaining Idahos economy. I want to be a part of this process. My career in the military gives me insight in how to best continue our relationships with military installations in Idaho. I also would be honored to work with the Idaho National Guard.
My goal is to be a State Representative. If I am selected to fill that position, it would be the honor of a lifetime. I would love to serve as a legislator as long as I am able to build the relationships that would allow me to best serve the members of this legislative district. I have no plans to seek any higher political office.
