Matthew Frederick Leitman is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Prior to joining the court he was principal at the law firm Miller Canfield P.L.C. In July of 2013, President Obama nominated Leitman for a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.[1] Leitman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 98-0 on March 12, 2013.[2]
Early life and education
Leitman graduated with highest distinction, earning his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1990. He went on to attend Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 1993 with a J.D.[3]

On July 25, 2013, President Obama nominated Matthew Frederick Leitman to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan to fill the vacancy left by Marianne Battani.[1] Obama commented on the nomination, stating:
| “ | These men and women have had distinguished legal careers and I am honored to ask them to continue their work as judges on the federal bench. They will serve the American people with integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice.[3][4] | ” |
Leitman was rated Unanimously Well Qualified by the American Bar Association.
Leitman's nomination was returned by the Senate on January 3, 2014 and he was renominated on January 6th by President Obama.[5]
Leitman's nomination was reported to the full Senate on January 16, 204 after a voice vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee.[6] He was confirmed on March 12, 2014 by the Senate on a vote of 98-0.[2]

Conyers on ballot
Judge Leitman on May 23, 2014, ruled in favor of placing the name of Congressman John Conyers on the primary election ballot in Michigan despite successful challenges to that listing by administrative rulings and a lower court. "Experts in election law said Judge Leitman’s favorable ruling was not surprising considering the case’s similarities to Nader v. Blackwell, in which a panel of judges agreed that imposing voter registration requirements on signature circulators in Ohio was an impermissible restriction on political speech."[7]
