Matthew A Kerner participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 6, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Matthew A Kerner's responses follow below.[1]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
| “ | 1) Substance abuse recovery 2) Pulling West Virginia out of poverty |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
| “ | Employing effective long term recovery strategies to the Addiction crisis. I am in long term recovery from a substance abuse dissorder and work in the recovery field, it is extremely rare for me to go more than a week without someone I know dying from the disease of addiction. Addiction impacts every facet of life in West Virginia from unemployability in our workforce to thousands of children in foster care with about 800 of them placed out of state. We have an unknown number of grandparents who have been forced back into parenthood because of the unavailability of parents due to impact of addiction. I have personal experience guiding people out of addiction and if elected will me the most experienced person in our legislature on the topic.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Matthew A Kerner answered the following:
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
| “ | When my step father died at 41 years old after an extended illness it threw my entire family into poverty. We were fortunate that we had experienced a normal middle class life before and were eventually able to recover although permanent recovery from poverty was hampered in my case my also having to overcome a substance abuse problem. I am grateful that I can use my personal experience to help others overcome these obstacles.[3] | ” |
| “ | West Virginia leads the nation by far in per capita deaths from drug overdose. We are also one of the poorest states. These two issues are intertwined and must be addressed simultaneously.[3] | ” |
| “ | Redistricting should be done in as non political a way as possible to avoid gerrymandering by any party.[3] | ” |
| “ | In addiction to the house of delegates, I am also running for my county and state Democtratic executive committees.[3] | ” |
