Campaign themes

2016

Kirk's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Gun Safety:

  • Gun ownership is a right and a responsibility. Every time I here of a kid accidentally shooting another kid while playing with a gun, I am distraught. Every time I hear about a stolen gun being used in a crime, I am troubled. These are tragedies that can be avoided by doing one simple thing. Lock your guns up. I want to make sure there is no excuse.
  • I am proposing a tax credit of up to $100 per taxpayer for the purchase of a gun safe, let’s put an end to gun accidents and gun theft.

2nd Amendment:

I believe in the 2nd amendment. I also believe that the Constitution was created as a living document to be altered with the times. We need to know who is buying assault rifles and those people need to be subjected to background checks, no more selling assault rifles at gun shows, everything else is fair game. We need to modernize the system for quicker checks and the ability to conduct pre-checks so that gun owners can sell with confidence.

Economy:

My philosophy on the economy is simple a strong middle class sustains a strong economy. When working class people make more they buy cars, buy houses, buy new washers and dryers, have homes fixed and remodeled, and on and on. When the super wealthy make more from their investments they just add another column to their bank balance. Jobs are created because there is a demand for products and services not because taxes are low for rich people. We need an economy that is fair to the working class people who have been abandoned by our political and business leaders. The key to transforming our economy starts with demanding loyalty from the business community and insisting our leaders take responsibility for providing the infrastructure businesses need to be competitive and grow.

Energy: We need an Energy System that works for all of us, creates thousands of new jobs, and provides us with protection from outside threats that may wish to damage our infrastructure. Taking down 1,000 solar arrays is a lot harder than one coal burning power plant. It is our patriotic duty to demand quite literally power for the people.[2]
