Matthew Schlapp is a Republican political consultant and strategist. He is the principal for the Alexandria-based Cove Strategies, a political consulting firm. Schlapp is also the chairman for the American Conservative Union, which also organizes CPAC, the annual conservative conference. Schlapp is on the board of directors for the American Conservative Union Foundation and the 60 Plus Foundation. Previously, he was the deputy assistant and political director to former President George W. Bush.
Career
According to his bio on the Cove Strategies website, Matthew Schlapp began his political career in 1994; he served as press secretary, deputy chief of staff and campaign manager on Capitol Hill.[1]
In 2001, Schlapp was former President George W. Bush's deputy assistant and political director.[2][1][3]
In 2004, Schlapp began at Koch Industries as vice president of federal affairs at Koch Companies Public Sector, LLC. He worked on federal public policy strategies regarding environmental and energy policies, financial markets, legal reform, and international and domestic tax issues.[1]
In 2014, Schlapp was elected as chairman of the American Conservative Union, which, along with the American Conservative Union Foundation, is responsible for organizing the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, also known as CPAC.[4]
Connections and alliances
Matthew Schlapp is the chairman of the American Conservative Union (ACU); Carly Fiorina, a Republican 2016 presidential candidate, and Amy Noone Frederick—president of the 60 Plus Association and Fiorina's senior campaign advisor—are on the board of directors. Schlapp, Fiorina, and Frederick are also on the board of the American Conservative Union Foundation. Schlapp is also on the board of the 60 Plus Association's foundation.[3] Moreover, Schlapp is the principal of Cove Strategies for which Frank Sadler, Fiorina's campaign manager, used to work.[5]
