Campaign themes
2016
Shrum's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
“ |
State Budget: The budgeting process is the primary battleground of every Legislative session. Legislators will decide which program gets funded and which programs get cut. We need to fight for every single penny, so the programs and institutions on which we rely are not trampled by ultra conservative Republicans who place party over people. Public Safety: Now more than ever, public safety remains a primary concern. We must find ways to protect our neighborhoods, workplaces and school campuses from random acts of violence and address the mental health issues that lead to such atrocities. Growing Austin’s economy with high paying jobs and increased opportunities for small business: We must promote locally smart development in our community, and work with all stakeholders to ensure Austin continues to be the most desirable city in Texas to work, live and raise a family. Criminal Justice Reform: From DWI laws to drug laws to expunction procedures and many points in between, the Texas Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure is full of holes and inequities. As a former prosecutor and current criminal defense attorney, I have the experience and insight to address these problems and will fight to ensure our laws are both fair and just. Meaningful Tax Reform: Texas has one of the most regressive tax structures in the nation, one that puts the burden on the most financially incapable of our citizens. We must focus on finding ways and means to raise revenue to fund our schools and priorities that are fair to all citizens.[1] |
