I'm a dedicated worker, and always have been. When I was 11 I started mowing grass. By 13, I was at my parents' feed store every Saturday. Sometimes there was work, sometimes not, but I always showed up ready. By the time I was 15, I was working at a McDonalds in Pekin, Illinois. By summer ‘87, I joined the US Army Reserves. I served as a Reservist for many years before going back to school.

Now I work as an insurance broker, committed to guiding people towards the best quality of life. All the while, I've been married for 25 years to my wife Mary, and I'm the proud father of Mattie Elizabeth, 11, and George William 6, both born here in Johnston County, NC.

My mission is simple: to put the needs of the people of the 26th District first, and prepare it for the future. I believe in equal opportunity, justice for all, and will work tirelessly to represent the true interests of this growing community. As long as the current House remains unchallenged, these interests will remain unheard.

I'm not running to make a career out of politics, unlike my opponent, nor have I lived here all my life. My parents were originally from Clayton, NC, and I came home many years ago to stick by family and take care of them. I've lived a lot of places and seen a lot of things (all around the world), but I came back to Clayton and it felt like home. I choose to be here for our future, and I hope you'll choose me as your next State Representative.
  • Preserving democracy is at the core of my campaign. In North Carolina, an unchecked supermajority threatens the very essence of balanced governance. I am committed to ensuring that no single party dominates the Legislature, as it's essential to prevent overreach and uphold the values of our diverse population. By promoting bipartisanship, I aim to create a legislative body where ideas are debated, compromises are sought, and decisions reflect the collective will of the people. Together, let's restore the equilibrium, fostering a government that truly represents all North Carolinians.
  • Our healthcare system is in crisis, ranking among the bottom 5 in the nation. The GOP-led legislature's inaction exacerbates the issue, evident in our high infant mortality rate and restrictive abortion policies. As an experienced insurance broker, I understand the complexities and pitfalls of the healthcare landscape. I will advocate for comprehensive reforms that prioritize accessibility, affordability, and quality care. I will champion initiatives addressing these reforms, and fight for policies that bridge gaps in coverage, reduce infant mortality, relieve financial burden, and ensure women's reproductive rights. It's time for leadership that prioritizes the well-being of North Carolinians over political ideology.
  • Equal and public education at all levels is increasingly important and under attack. I staunchly oppose school choice and voucher programs. Education is the bedrock of our society, and it should be inclusive, equitable, and secular. I advocate for strengthening public schools, ensuring they receive adequate funding and resources to provide a quality education for all students, regardless of their background, beliefs, or economic condition. Diverting public funds to private, often religious, institutions exacerbates educational inequalities, leaving some students behind. Let's invest in our public schools and bolster an inclusive environment where all students are prepared for a diverse and interconnected world.
Healthcare access is a paramount, spurred by North Carolina's alarming healthcare disparities. I am determined to protect vulnerable population, enhance mental health support, among many other compassionate issues. Our state deserves a healthcare system that. I'm profoundly passionate about public policies that shape the foundation of our community and the lives of North Carolinians. Education is a driving force for me, pushing me to advocate for equitable access and increased funding. Our children deserve the best opportunities to succeed. Of course, none of this is accomplished while one branch of government has a stranglehold on the rest - an imbalance led by a unresponsive, unrepresentative, uncaring supermajority.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Its exploration of justice, compassion, and moral growth continues to inspire society with a piercing lens of what was wrong at the time, and the work we still have left to do. Atticus Finch, with his unwavering moral compass and commitment to justice, bears the qualities I admire.
In the realm of public service, embodying diligence, competency, and benevolence is pivotal.

Diligence is the muscle of effective governance, entailing unwavering commitment to the tasks at hand and tireless dedication to constituents' needs. It is the engine that propels progress and ensures that promises made are promises kept.

Competency is the linchpin that transforms ideas into tangible results. Elected officials must be well-versed in the intricacies of the issues they champion, possessing the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of policy-making. Competency instills confidence, reassuring constituents that their representative is not merely a figurehead but a capable advocate for their interests.

Benevolence towards fellow citizens is the compass that guides decision-making. It involves prioritizing the well-being of the community over personal gain and actively seeking solutions that uplift all members. This virtue fosters inclusivity, ensuring that policies are crafted with empathy and fairness, leaving no one behind.

These qualities, often underestimated, define the essence of a good elected official. In a landscape where trust in public institutions is paramount, diligence, competency, and benevolence not only build a strong foundation for effective governance but also rekindle faith in the democratic process.
From a young age, my intellectual curiosity has woven a thread of fascination with public policy and politics that persists to this day. This enduring interest serves as the foundation of my dedication to staying informed about local affairs and the nuanced issues affecting my district. Engaging in public debates as an advocate has allowed me to refine my understanding and contribute substantively to the discourse surrounding our community's well-being.

Amidst these qualities and independent experiences, my personality and unwavering drive stand out. These characteristics, coupled with a wealth of knowledge garnered through years of active participation in public discourse, uniquely position me as the ideal representative for my district. I am not just a passive observer; I am a committed advocate, armed with the intellectual acumen and the tenacity required to address the multifaceted challenges facing our community.
At the heart of public service lies a profound commitment to the oath taken, an oath that goes beyond mere words. The core responsibilities of elected officials are threefold: to be responsive, representative, and mindful.

Responsiveness is the bedrock of a thriving democracy. It involves actively listening to the concerns and aspirations of constituents, understanding the intricacies of their lives, and translating those insights into meaningful action. An elected official must be a conduit for the voices that shape their community.

Representativeness is a solemn duty that extends beyond mere presence in the state house. It demands diligent effort to authentically represent the diverse needs of constituents, ensuring their concerns are not only heard but actively legislated. It involves being a tireless advocate for the issues that matter most to the people one serves.

Mindfulness is the overarching perspective that guides responsible governance. It requires an acute awareness of the broader implications of decisions made, considering not only the immediate impact on constituents but also the enduring legacy left for future generations. Elected officials must be stewards of the public trust, approaching their duties with a sense of duty to the greater good.

In upholding these core responsibilities, elected officials not only honor their commitment but also fortify the very foundation of our democratic principles. It is a pledge to be responsive to the people, representative of their needs, and mindful of the enduring impact of their decisions. Together, we must ensure that the ideals of democracy are not just upheld but strengthened, fostering a government that is truly of, by, and for the people.
My aspiration is to depart from the legislature having transformed it into a much-improved institution compared to its current state. I yearn to be a catalyst for the necessary changes, becoming an integral part of a transformative journey. Above all, my motivation stems from the desire to set a profound example for my children.

The rights that my generation has enjoyed are under siege, facing unprecedented challenges. I refuse to stand idly by as these rights are stripped away from the next generation. I am determined to be remembered as a staunch defender, fighting tooth and nail to preserve the hard-fought rights that define our democracy. My mission extends beyond personal aspirations; it's a commitment to leaving a legacy of resilience and advocacy that my children, and generations to come, can draw inspiration from.
The first indelible historical event etched into my memory is witnessing the harrowing scenes of the Vietnam War unfold on television. It was the early 1970s, perhaps around 1973 or 1974, and I, a mere 4 or 5 years old, found myself captivated and bewildered by the gravity of the images flashing across the screen. Even in my tender years, the gravity of the conflict left a mark on my consciousness, serving as a stark introduction to the complexities of the world beyond the safe confines of my home. Little did I comprehend then, but those televised moments of war became the first seeds of historical awareness, sowing a sense of curiosity and a lifelong commitment to understanding the world.
Other than mowing grass as kid for cash, by 13 I was at my parents' feed store every Saturday until I was 15 and started working at a McDonalds.
I have two, for different reasons: "Manufacturing Consent" by Noam Chomsky, because it's profound impact lies in its ability to cut through the conventional rhetoric, offering a critical examination of how money and media shape and influence our perceptions. Plato’s "Republic" is also a close second. Its enduring appeal is rooted in its astute exploration of the fundamentals of power. This timeless classic delves into the intricate dynamics of power, and the wit, depth, and wisdom embedded within it continue to resonate, offering invaluable insights into the nuanced workings of authority and governance across different scales.
Sherlock Holmes, because he is always so meticulous and unafraid, solving crimes with self-examination and ingenuity.
"Goodbye Yellowbrick Road" by Elton John.
The affordability of everyday life. Growing up, my father served as a correctional officer, and my mother didn't work, meaning we had to make ends meet with careful consideration. Today, the weight of preserving one's livelihood and supporting a family is a formidable struggle. This pressure isn't unique to me; countless residents in North Carolina have long felt the strain.
In the original design of our government, the inherent quality of its branches lies in their capacity to balance one another. While each branch undertakes essential responsibilities independently, the fundamental purpose is to prevent any one from overpowering the others. Currently, in North Carolina, the state legislature is impeding the governor's ability to fully execute his authority. This goes against the core principles of checks and balances, hindering the collaborative and nuanced governance intended by our system's architects. It underscores the importance of restoring equilibrium, fostering cooperation between branches, and ensuring that no single entity can unduly dominate, preserving the democratic ideals upon which our government was founded. The need for a harmonious interplay between branches is crucial for effective governance, and addressing these imbalances is pivotal to upholding the integrity of our democratic framework.
Educating our youth is not merely a commitment to individuals; it's an investment in the very fabric of our society. As we endeavor to equip the next generation for the challenges of the future, it's imperative to recognize that the demands on our health, transportation, and governmental services are poised to intensify significantly in the next decade. The district I aim to represent is experiencing an unprecedented population growth, a trend that underscores the urgency of proactive legislative preparedness.

The influx of residents demands a strategic vision for our educational systems, ensuring they evolve to meet the evolving needs of a burgeoning community. Simultaneously, the strain on health services, transportation infrastructure, and governmental facilities requires thoughtful planning to prevent a lag in essential services.

Being cognizant of these impending challenges is not just insightful governance but a moral imperative. As a representative, I am dedicated to advocating for forward-thinking policies that address the imminent growth, ensuring that our district is not just prepared but thrives in the face of the dynamic changes on the horizon. It's about fostering resilience, promoting sustainable development, and laying the groundwork for a community that can adapt, grow, and prosper harmoniously.
Of course it’s beneficial to have someone with experience, but I would contend that experience does not always equal effectiveness, especially if it arises from nepotism or party loyalty. True effectiveness in governance stems from a diverse and principled foundation, ensuring equitable and efficient representation for all constituents. It's not just about the years of experience but the quality and diversity of those experiences that shape a leader's ability to serve the people.
The legislative body thrives when there exists an active, engaged, honest, and communal relationship among legislators. Despite inevitable disagreements, fostering respect for individual perspectives is paramount for the functioning of deliberative bodies. It's through the synthesis of diverse ideas and perspectives that effective, inclusive policies are crafted. Embracing a culture of open communication and mutual respect not only strengthens the legislative process but also exemplifies the essence of collaborative governance.
Absolutely not. My devotion lies with my family, particularly my role in caring for my mother, and my commitment to serving the community. I don't view this as a stepping stone for a political career in higher office. My priorities are firmly grounded in addressing localized issues and making a tangible impact externally. I'm driven by a sincere desire to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of those closest to me and the community I aim to represent.
I can't say there's one singular story that I can choose from, because in my daily life so many people have told me their struggles, even before I decided to run. I've listened to teachers who stress about their families because they are underpaid, stress about their students because of how underfunded and understaffed their schools are. I work with seniors and people seeking medical insurance that are anxious about the gravity of the choices they have to make, and seen how difficult people's lives can be, especially when the protections for them are not there. The profound stories I've heard echo a common sentiment — a shared understanding of the detrimental impact of legislative imbalance, even voiced by lifelong Republicans. These stories reinforce my commitment to fostering a balanced, equitable, and responsive government that genuinely addresses the concerns of every North Carolinian.
Why did Star Wars episodes 4, 5, and 6 come before episodes 1, 2, and 3?

In charge of production, Yoda was.
It is essential that the legislature actively oversees and grants the use of emergency powers. Empowering another branch of government, especially the executive, should not be left unchecked. The gravity of such decisions requires careful consideration and the input of elected representatives who are accountable to the people. By subjecting the use of emergency powers to legislative approval and ongoing supervision, we ensure a robust system of checks and balances. This approach not only safeguards against potential abuses but also upholds the principle of accountability that is integral to healthy democratic governance. It's about striking the right balance to address crises effectively while preventing any undue concentration of power that could compromise the very essence of our democratic ideals.
I am resolute in my commitment to drafting a comprehensive bill aimed at not only addressing but also capping the exorbitant fees associated with health insurance and loans. The current state of these fees has reached astronomical levels, burdening individuals and families alike. My proposed legislation will strive to provide relief by setting reasonable and just limits on these charges, ensuring that essential services remain accessible to all.

Furthermore, it is imperative that we confront the pervasive issue of predatory loans and hidden fees that exploit vulnerable individuals. I'd like to draft a bill that enacts stringent measures to protect people from falling victim to such practices, fostering a financial landscape where transparency prevails, and consumers are shielded from exploitative lending practices.
Health Committee: I'm deeply invested in the well-being of North Carolinians, and serving on the Health Committee allows me to advocate for comprehensive healthcare solutions. I aim to address disparities and work towards improving overall health outcomes for residents.

Insurance Committee: With my background as an insurance broker, I have a nuanced understanding of the insurance landscape. Serving on the Insurance Committee provides me with an opportunity to leverage my expertise, ensuring fair practices and promoting policies that benefit both insurers and the insured.

Education K-12 Committee: Education is a cornerstone of my campaign. Serving on the Education K-12 Committee allows me to actively contribute to the reform and enhancement of the education system. I'm committed to advocating for equitable access, increased funding, and innovative solutions for K-12 students.

Transportation Committee: Infrastructure is pivotal for economic development, and my interest in the Transportation Committee is driven by a commitment to improving local infrastructure. I aim to enhance public transit and ensure effective transportation systems that support the growth of North Carolina.

Energy and Public Utilities Committee: Recognizing the importance of sustainable energy practices, my interest in this committee reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship. I aim to advocate for responsible energy policies that align with the state's long-term sustainability goals.

Ethics Committee: Upholding ethical standards is paramount in governance. By participating in the Ethics Committee, I seek to contribute to fostering a political environment that is transparent, accountable, and rooted in the highest ethical standards. My goal is to rebuild trust in public institutions.
Financial transparency and government accountability are non-negotiable principles that I hold dear. As a candidate, I am committed to fostering an environment where constituents have a clear understanding of how their hard-earned tax dollars are utilized. I believe in open and accessible financial records, ensuring transparency in every aspect of governmental spending.

Government accountability is equally paramount. Elected officials must be held to the highest standards of integrity and be answerable to the people they serve. I am dedicated to creating mechanisms that enable rigorous oversight, where decisions are made with the utmost consideration for the public's best interests.

Together, financial transparency and government accountability form the bedrock of a trustworthy and effective governance. I aim to rebuild trust in our public institutions and ensure that the government remains a faithful steward of the people's resources.
