Maynard Keller has lived in the City of Roanoke for 31 years. His wife, Rachel, is a teacher at Roanoke Valley Christian School. Together, they have five children and three grandchildren. Maynard grew up in a blue collar household in rural Pennsylvania. His dad worked in a paper factory and his mom was a school bus driver. During summers, Maynard worked to pay his way through school on hot roofs throughout Pennsylvania. Here, he learned the value of hard work and why his family of immigrants came to America in search of the American dream. Maynard is the founder and president of American Financial Planning as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER(R) professional, which provides community members with services to protect assets and maximize income. He also serves as a founding elder at his Messianic synagogue and is actively involved in a number of community organizations, including: Team Roll Over Cancer, Roanoke Valley Region AACA, and the Bus Riders of Roanoke Advocacy Group.
  • Make Roanoke Affordable.

Families are concerned about keeping the lights on, putting food on the table, and paying next month’s rent. Real estate taxes have gone through the roof. Real estate assessments have risen an average of 47% over the past four years. At this rate, taxes will double in about six years.

What's the solution? The Real Estate Assessment Tax Equity (R.A.T.E.) plan. Roanoke City's real estate tax is $1.22 per $100 of assessed value. The R.A.T.E. plan would cap real estate tax increases to the Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment for everyone.

  • Make Roanoke Safe. Roanoke has become less safe and a haven for violent crime, gangs, and drug peddling. It’s time to prioritize the victim and safety over the criminal. We must restore law and order in our streets and fully-fund law enforcement so that no family is concerned for the safety of their child just by stepping outside.
  • Make Roanoke a Jobs Destination. Roanoke needs to once again become a destination for new, good paying jobs. Jobs that provide fair wages and benefits, and job security. The first thing Roanoke can do to make it more attractive to industries looking for a new home is to make it safe again. Industries need to know that we, in Roanoke, prioritize public safety, law enforcement, and first responders. Next, we need to reduce taxes across the board, including the real estate tax, BPOL tax, grocery tax, the tax on clothing, and personal property taxes. Roanoke needs to become safer and more affordable - allowing hard working residents to keep more of their hard earned money. It requires leadership and innovative thinking to get this done.

Building relationships with other legislators is very beneficial. We represent our district, but also the entirety of Virginia. We must be aware of the needs in the entire Commonwealth.
