An effort in Austin, Texas, to recall Mayor Steve Adler and councilmembers Sabino Renteria, Ann Kitchen and Paige Ellis was initiated in September 2020. Petitioners started gathering signatures on September 16, 2020.[1] According to the group leading the recall effort, the signature-gathering process ended in February 2021.[2]

Recall supporters

The recall effort was organized by Austin resident Becky McMillian through the group named Your Minute Is Up. The group's website described reasons for recalling each city official as being "for endangering the lives of health, safety and welfare of Austin citizens and local businesses, for mismanagement of public policies and resources that have eroded the Austin brand and decreased affordability for all citizens, and for catering to special interest which is reducing the quality of life for residents and visitors."[3]

Recall organizers were required to submit valid signatures equal to 10% of the city's registered voters—about 66,000 signatures—to force a recall election against Mayor Adler. For each city council member, petitioners needed valid signatures equal to 10% of the registered voters in that councilmember's district.[1] On February 25, 2021, Your Minute Is Up announced on Facebook that the group had stopped gathering signatures. The Facebook post cited insufficient signatures, funding, and staffing as reasons for the end to the recall effort.[2]
