An effort in Friend, Nebraska, to recall Mayor Jewels Knoke and Councilmembers Phyllis Ryan and Shane Stutzman was initiated in 2020. Recall organizers failed to submit enough signatures to put the recall election on the ballot.[1]
Recall supporters
The recall effort was initiated in response to a state audit that found $1.4 million was misused by former city utility superintendent Patrick Gates, who had been significantly overpaying for supplies from a distributor. The Friend City Council voted to terminate Gates and City Clerk Debbie Gilmer after the audit was released.[2]

The number of valid signatures required to force a recall election is 35% of the total vote cast for the office in the last general election.
Recall organizers were required to submit 54 signatures for Ryan and 75 signatures for Knoke and Stutzman. The city clerk found 66 signatures valid in the recall against Knoke and 40 signatures valid in the recall against Ryan and Stutzman.[3]
