An effort to recall Mayor Thomas Whelan and City Councilmen Thomas Flaherty, John Jaroski, John Kelaher, William Massa, Thomas McGovern, Aniello Pecoraro, and Frank Quilty did not go to a vote in Jersey City, New Jersey.[1]
Whelan and Flaherty were removed from office after being found guilty of bribery and extortion and sentenced to 15 years in prison.[2][3][4]
Recall supporters
The Community Action Council and the Citizens Independent League both circulated recall petitions.[4]
Path to the ballot
The Community Action Council submitted approximately 31,000 signatures for Whelan. 13,098 signatures were ruled invalid. Superior Court Judge Samuel Larner ruled that the Community Action Council could combine the signatures they had collected with the signatures collected by the Citizens Independent League, but a recall election was not held.[4]
