Once mayors elected in 2021 assumed office, the mayors of 38 state capitals were affiliated with the Democratic Party, six were Republicans, one was independent, and two were nonpartisan. The partisan affiliation of three state capital mayors was unknown.

The city of Augusta utilizes a council-manager system combined with a strong mayor. In this form of municipal government, the city council serves as the city's primary legislative body and the mayor serves as the city's chief executive. The mayor, however, appoints a city manager to oversee the city's day-to-day operations and execute city policies.[1]
