The mayor's chair and three seats on the Mesa City Council in Arizona were up for general election on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on August 30, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 1, 2016.[1] Mayor John Giles ran unopposed for re-election. Districts 1, 2, and 3 of the city council were up for election and because the representatives of those districts—Dave Richins, Alex Finter, and Dennis Kavanaugh—were term limited at two terms (eight years), voters elected new members for all three districts in 2016.[2]
The races for mayor, District 1, and District 3 were decided in the primary election because the winner received over 50 percent of the vote. Mayor Giles ran unopposed. In District 1, Mark Freeman won 55 percent of the vote against Courtney Guinn and Pat Gilbert. In District 3, Ryan Winkle defeated Jerry Lewis. Only the District 2 race appeared on the general election ballot. Jeremy Whittaker and Shelly Allen won more votes than Kathleen Winn in the primary election, but neither received enough to win the seat outright. Whittaker defeated Allen in the general election in November.Three of the five seats on the Mesa Public Schools school board were also up for general election on November 8, 2016.
