2026 battleground election
Ballotpedia identified the March 3, 2026, Republican primary for Texas' 34th Congressional District as a battleground election. The summary below is from our coverage of this election, found here.
Nine candidates are running in the Republican primary for Texas' 34th Congressional District on March 3, 2026. Three candidates lead in media attention and fundraising: Eric Flores (R), Mayra Flores (R), and Scott Mandel (R).
Incumbent Vicente Gonzalez Jr. (D) is running for re-election in the Democratic primary. He was first elected to the district in 2022, defeating incumbent Mayra Flores 53% to 44%. Flores was first elected to the district in the June 2022 special election, receiving 51% of the vote. Flores faced Gonzalez in the 2024 general election, which Gonzalez won 51% to 49%.
Following Texas' 2025 congressional redistricting, Marijke Friedman of The Texas Tribune wrote that the new map "gives Republicans better odds to capture Gonzalez's South Texas district."[3]
Eric Flores (no relation to Mayra Flores) is a lawyer and veteran of the U.S. Army and Texas Army National Guard.[4] He served as an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas.[4] Flores is campaigning on his legal experience, saying he "led landmark prosecutions of cartel-connected and human trafficking operations" and worked on cases "defending municipalities and school districts across Texas."[4] He says he would work to secure the country's borders while supporting legal immigration.[5][6] Highlighting his military experience, Flores says he provided border security for Texas with the National Guard and that he would address veterans' issues.[4][5]
Mayra Flores previously served as the representative for Texas' 34th Congressional District from 2022 to 2023. She is campaigning on her legislative experience "proudly [serving] South Texas on the Homeland Security and Agriculture Committees."[7] She says she would focus on family issues and "put parents back in the driver seat [to] protect kids from those who wish to push their views on our families."[8] Highlighting her experience immigrating to the United States from Mexico, Flores says, "We must secure our border to keep bad individuals out and to encourage legal immigration."[8]
Mandel is a former law enforcement officer and business owner.[9] Mandel is campaigning on his business's work in the security industry, saying he has "hands-on experience in border security operations" and that he would support "a full border shutdown once and for all."[10] Mandel says he would grow the economy by reducing regulations and decreasing government spending, and he says he has seen "the systems causing much of the waste and inefficiencies" through his business's government contracts.[10] Mandel says he would address veterans' issues and support changes to the Department of Veterans Affairs.[10]
Also running in the primary are Keith Allen (R), Luis Buentello (R), Fred Hinojosa (R), Gregory Kunkle Jr. (R), Bam Morales (R), and Jay Nagy (R).
As of November 2025, The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter and Larry J. Sabato's Crystal Ball each rated the general election Lean Republican, and Inside Elections with Nathan Gonzales rated the general election a Toss-up.

Flores' campaign website stated the following:
COMMONSENSE TEXAS SOLUTIONS
SECURING THE BORDER
Illegal immigration encourages and funds human/child trafficking. I legally immigrated to America when I was six years old. Living in South Texas offers a unique perspective on illegal immigration and how it affects the livelihood of American citizens. We MUST secure our border to keep bad individuals out and to encourage LEGAL immigration.
MORE JOBS, BETTER OPPORTUNITIES
We must create opportunities for everyone to live the American Dream and find prosperity. Through smart, pro-growth policies, we can create an environment where small businesses can create jobs in South Texas.
For too long, radicals on both sides of the aisle have attempted to put politics into the middle of running a business and that has to end. Job creators should feel empowered, not hindered by burdensome taxes and regulations.
EDUCATION, NOT INDOCTRINATION
Our children's education is the foundation on which they will build the rest of their lives. But today, too many kids are not getting the education they deserve. Radical gender ideology has infiltrated our children’s classrooms, and disturbing content can be found even in elementary schools. America needs to get back to the basics and focus on teaching our children the knowledge they need to be successful in life - not imposing far-left world views that poison our children’s minds.
Parents should always have the right to know what their children are being taught at school. And parental voices should be heard as decisions about curriculum are made by school administrators and districts.
Families should also have the freedom to choose the education that fits their children best. School choice is a human right: one size fits all systems are a relic of the past that kept too many children trapped in failing schools and held them back from succeeding in life.
We can also do a much better job supporting our public school teachers. So many of them care deeply about our children but do not have the resources or support they need in the classroom to teach to their highest potential. That is unacceptable and needs to change.
PROTECTING KIDS
The United States remains the number one consumer of child pornography and child sex trafficking. The fact is, there are sick people out there and we have to protect kids from them.
We must hold the cartels, Mexican government, and Americans who enable these actions accountable.
I will continue to be a tireless advocate for securing the border, stopping the flow of sex trafficking, and protecting kids from dangerous situations. Enough is enough and it's time for all of us to stand up for what is right!
ENERGY JOBS & INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE
We have the energy right here in Texas and across the United States to lower home energy prices, gas prices, and secure our national interests. In Congress, I was proud to support legislation that empowered our energy producers and stopped the overburdensome regulations.
American energy is the backbone of a strong, resilient economy and, in Congress, I will continue to fight for every source of reliable energy.
Oil and gas employs many Texans and the Left's assault on the energy industry affects each of them and their families. In Congress, I will protect their jobs and way of life so their families can live the American Dream.
EMPOWERING PARENTS
As a mom, I couldn't imagine my kid's school or the government telling me how to raise my children, but countless American families are facing this situation every day. It's time we put parents back in the driver seat and protect kids from those who wish to push their views on our families.
ENACT THE PARENTS BILL OF RIGHTS
In March of 2023, the Republican led House of Representatives passed the Parents Bill of Rights, protecting a parent's right to be involved in their child's lives and decision making.
PROTECTING PARENTS CUSTODY OF KIDS
We are seeing stories across the nation of kids being taken away from their parents because of radical gender ideology. A child should not be taken away from their parents.
MAKING HEALTHCARE AFFORDABLE
Healthcare is out of reach for many Americans because of rising premiums and out-of-control costs. As a medical professional myself, I see how the system takes advantage of those who need care the most.
In Congress, I will continue working towards lower prices for care and prescriptions - because lives depend on it.
CARING FOR OUR VETERANS
Our American Veterans have put everything on the line to protect the America we love, now we owe it to them to ensure they have care and resources they need. From job training to lifelong quality healthcare, Veterans need a voice in Washington who will never back down.
I am ready to fight for our Veterans to ensure they never struggle to get what they need from a government agency. In Congress, I was proud to vote in favor of the PACT Act to expand VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic chemicals. I also supported the NDAA to fully fund the military and the brave men and women who selflessly serve.
PROTECTING SOCIAL SECURITY
Washington politicians love to pay for their mistakes with the money promised to our seniors. I will always protect Social Security and Medicare, never putting the future of our older Americans in jeopardy.
Seniors deserve to have a voice at the table who will not sell them out to plug a financial hole or push a dangerous agenda. I am here to protect them and the programs they have paid into their entire lives.

Pro-God My christian faith is a core part of who I am. My parents raised me to be a strong woman of faith and defending individuals religious liberties will always be a priority of mine. Pro-America America is the greatest country in the world and it has afforded me the life I have today. Through hard work anything is possible in America. I will ALWAYS put America first. Pro-Second Amendment The right to bear Arms is something I hold near and dear. Americans should always be able to protect themselves and their families. I legally immigrated to America when I was six years old. Living in South Texas offers a unique perspective on illegal immigration and how it affects the livelihood of American citizens. We MUST secure our border to keep bad individuals out and to encourage LEGAL immigration. Veterans My goal is to fight for every veteran; to fix the current health and medical issues at the VA, to address the amount of homeless vets on the streets, to get additional funding and resources so they can over come any mental issues they face. I love all our men and women in uniform, both past and present. Pro-Jobs Texas is the economic engine of America because of its low regulation and pro-business mindset. Texans know that when you get the government out of the way and let the private sector create jobs, the economy will flourish. I am an advocate against socialism and will always promote capitalism. Pro-Oil and Gas The oil and gas industry is critical to the success of our State and Nation. The industry has been hit hard in recent years but I will always work to help the oil and gas industry and stand firm against radical policies that would undermine it Pro-Affordable Healthcare As a healthcare worker I speak to residents of CD 34 day in and day out and understand that having access to affordable healthcare is the most important issue facing residents of South Texas. In Congress I will always strive to improve our healthcare system and work to find solutions that will lower the cost of prescription medicine.[14] |
