The McClatchy Company is a media company that owns 30 newspapers in 14 states and operates a bureau in Washington D.C. covering political news.

Background

McClatchy was founded when James McClatchy helped start the company's first newspaper, The Sacramento Bee, in 1857.[1]

In 2006, the McClatchy Company purchased Knight Ridder, becoming the second biggest newspaper publisher in the United States at that time.[1][2] In 2020, McClatchy and its affiliated companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.[3] The company was acquired by Chatham Asset Management, a New Jersey-based hedge fund, at auction later in 2020.[4]

In 2024, McClatchy merged with accelerate360, the publisher of Us Weekly.[5]

McClatchy Media currently owns 30 newspapers in 14 states.[7] As of 2024, McClatchy's newspapers have over 100 million unique visitors a month.[8] The company also maintains a Washington D.C. bureau that publishes news stories on McClatchyDC.com, as well as the company's newspapers.[9]

McClatchy's newspapers have won 57 Pulitzer Prizes during their history.[10]
