Mississippi: Incumbent David McVeay and newcomer Gerald Wayne Jones were victorious in the Republican primary runoff election for two Jackson County Justice Court judgeships on August 23, 2011. Justice Court judges deal with small claims civil cases, misdemeanor criminal cases and traffic offenses that occur outside a municipality. They may also conduct bond hearings and preliminary hearings in felony cases, issue search warrants and perform marriage ceremonies.[1][2]
Judge McVeay, who is running for his third five-year term on the court, defeated fellow Republican Jerry Dalgo, Alderman of Ocean Springs. McVeay will continue to the November 8th general election, where he will face independent candidate Samuel Tucker. Following the election, McVeay stated, "It was a good clean race and that's mainly what I was hoping for," McVeay said. "I do want to thank my supporters. I have the best supporters in the world."[2]
The other race was between Gerald Wayne Jones and Lisa Bosarge Fairley, who were seeking to replace retired Judge Cecil Byrd. Jones won, and will be sworn into office in January, since there are no other challengers Democratic or independent challengers.[2]
