Meet Massachusetts' two new state representatives

BOSTON, Massachusetts: Two state legislative special elections were held in Massachusetts on April 2, 2013, following primaries on March 5. The elections were called to fill the vacancies in the 12th Essex and 28th Middlesex Districts. In the general election, Republican Leah Cole won the seat in the 18th Essex District, and Democrat Wayne A. Matewsky was elected to represent the 28th Middlesex District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
Here is a summary of what took place in each district up to April 2:
Just weeks after her re-election, state Rep. Joyce Spiliotis (D) died on November 29, 2012. On April 2, voters chose Republican Leah Cole to succeed Spiliotis in the state House. Cole faced one opponent, Gregory S. Bunn, in the March 5 Republican primary and went on to defeat Beverly A. Griffin Dunne (D) and Dave Gravel (I) in the special election on April 2, 2013.[1]
General election candidates:
State Rep. Stephen Smith (D) resigned on December 31, 2012, after pleading guilty to casting invalid absentee ballots in 2009 and 2010. Wayne A. Matewsky defeated four others in the Democratic primary on March 5, and advanced to the general election on April 2, where he overcame Rosa DiFlorio (I) and Dennis John Gianatassi (I).[2]
