I have served in public office for 8 years. During that time I have consistently stood on the right side of issues and advocated tirelessly for solutions that will benefit all of the people of Saint Louis. I took up issues that were not always popular when I knew that they had the power undo the inequities that have a firm grip on Saint Louis, from fighting for a higher minimum wage, civilian oversight of our police department, reproductive rights for people who can become pregnant, protections for victims of domestic violence, marijuana legalization, and responsible development with community benefits. In addition to this, I used my platform, political experience, and knowledge to help support other progressives running for office. The President of the Board of Alderman should be a leader who not only has experience and knowledge, but should be someone who understands the various challenges facing our City. A leader who boldly moves us forward, understanding that doing the same actions will produce the same outcomes, centers those most marginalized, and has a proven track record of working collaboratively with Mayor Jones and Comptroller Green.
  • A Saint Louis that truly works for everyone
  • Transparent, Inclusive, and Equitable Government
  • Workers Rights, a family and youth friendly Saint Louis, Reproductive Justice
I am passionate about about policy that builds a Saint Louis for all. Economic policy that produces a Saint Louis where workers are paid what they deserve, where worker's right to have a union is protected, have protected. Policy that ensures our children have high quality and affordable education from an early age, where parents don't have to pay a mortgage or forego basic necessities to cover the cost of childcare. Policies that help ensure all worker, including city workers, are paid worthy and deserving wages to make employment as attractive as possible and allow organizations and entities to operate with full staff. Policies that ensures our police department are able to build trust with community because the community knows that our police are held accountable for their actions and are here to serve and protect as often said but not as often practiced. Policies that aid in ensuring reproductive justice, included but not limited to access to abortions. Policies that provide protections and aid in justice and holistic healing for victims of domestic violence. Policies that support marijuana legalization and ensures one group of people in our society aren't being imprisoned or punished for something that we know a much larger portion engages in such as marijuana use. I am passionate about policy that ensures we are growing and expanded our city's economic base with responsible development that involves community benefits.
This office possesses the quality of legislative leadership. The Board of Alderman is the legislative body for the city of St.Louis and it has a major impact on the legislative agenda, goals, and outcomes for the city. The President position should be held by someone that understands policy and has demonstrated leadership skills that have positively impacted the City of Saint Louis. As someone that has studied political science, obtained a doctorate degree in educational policy and teaches public policy at a university I have a firm and clear understanding of policy and how to effectively govern in a way that allows policy that is for the benefit of the collective to successfully pass through political terrain. This should be held by a person who understands the power of coalitions and collaboration. As alder I've gotten policies such as fight for 15 and advocated against privatizing our cities public goods with the help of coalitions that included community organizations, residents, and other elected officials. My endorsement represent my ability to build with and work with others to accomplish a collective greater good that moves all of St.Louis in a positive direction.
One of the biggest powers of this office is that they assign all of the alders to committee's, decide what committee policy goes, and that they have one of three seats on the Board of Estimate and Apportions. It is important to have someone that is ethical, centers the collective good over their individual relationships, and is able to understand and position their colleagues to maximize their strengths and areas of expertise. It is important that someone who values public good, public benefits, and public investment is in this seat as they will have a major influence over what our city does and doesn't allocate resources to and invest in.
It is absolutely beneficial that holders of this office have previous political experience, This position is one of the highest leadership roles in our city and it is extremely difficult to lead others through what you have no experience in or direct knowledge of yourself. It also helps to be familiar of the political and social context of the city in order to have an understanding of what legislative and financial priorities are most beneficial.
The person who holds this seat needs to have excellent communication skills, which is the ability to talk but most importantly to listen. This person should also have excellent writing and research skills, this will help to ensure that rather than making decisions based off of personal feelings or individual relationships decisions are being made based off of what has successfully and unsuccessfully worked before.
