Devine, a University of Rhode Island graduate, and Leadership Rhode Island alumna has deep roots in North Kingstown. She has worked in many areas that impact the community including economic development and tourism and climate adaptation initiatives. She has also volunteered her time in many community activities including the Blue Bus Foundation, the North Kingstown Arts Council, and been involved in local politics including membership on the Board of the North Kingstown Democratic Town Committee.

“Having been at the State House at hearings, and testifying on some contentious legislation, I’ve realized how important it is to stay involved,” said Devine. “There are very real implications to our daily lives with bills such as the women’s reproductive health act and on-going sensible gun legislation. Specifically, the high capacity magazine limit bill that was voted down by my legislator, was the moment that made me realize I should step into the race. There is too much at stake, and if I can be another emphatic voice for change to these existing laws, it really matters right now. I’m passionate about a number of pressing issues and am poised to defend them.”

  • Sensible Gun Legislation: Gun violence and active shooter drills should not be what’s on a parent’s mind when they send their kids to school. She has already been actively involved in this advocacy with Moms Demand Action, and as a Representative will continue to work on bills that protect the rights of all kids and faculty creating a safe environment in which they can focus and thrive.
  • Protection of Women’s Rights: There are major concerns about women and girls' fundamental right to control their own bodies and reproductive health care. She passionately advocated at the State House to ensure the Woman’s Reproductive Privacy Act bill was codified into Rhode Island law in 2019. As a member of the legislature, she’ll continue to fight to keep these rights in place for all women and girls.
  • Environmental and Climate Issues: Rising seas, intensifying storms, and environmental toxins are already affecting everything in our state from clean air and good health to property values. Melissa knows that her neighbors are worried about these climate issues today, not just down the road. She will advocate for policies and climate legislation that make RI a healthier place to live and raise children.
Having been a caregiver for my Dad during his final years, I am personally invested in improving options for eldercare and caregiver support. We can do better by our aging population. Given 1 in 4 Rhode Islanders will be over 65 by 2030 we need to create a comprehensive, streamlined plan to take care of our aging population and support services.
