Campaign themes
2015
Smithson's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[2] Infrastructure
- Excerpt: "Our roads are in desperate need of repair and repaving, which have been ignored despite the 7 and 10 year cycle they should be on. Many neighborhoods in our District have grown and need sidewalks for children and families to walk/ride on. There are several places in the District which need upgrading in utilities, and several need attention due to code violations."
Public safety
- Excerpt: "Crime in our area is down 6% over last year, 10% from the previous year. We can do better by promoting neighborhood watches and working with our South Precinct in order to help build the community."
Education
- Excerpt: "Council does not have much say with public schools, only with how much money to give them each year. Metro and the council need to hold them accountable as to how much and where the money is spent. Measures need to be in place to insure the tax payers' money is being budgeted fairly across the county and being used properly."
Spending
- Excerpt: "We need to take a hard look at the debt of the city. I feel we have stretched ourselves very thin, and if another crisis was to hit Nashville (God forbid) such as a flood or natural/man-made disaster, we will not be able to recover due to our current borrowing limits. Also, a focus needs to be made to areas outside of downtown. Southeast Nashville contributes the majority of the tax base to the city, which is being used mostly for downtown improvements to generate tourism dollars, but we are not getting the resources and money in return to put back into our area."
