One of the seven seats on the Duval County Public Schools Board of Education was up for by-district general election on November 8, 2016. The open seat in District 7 saw six newcomers vying for it: Melody Bolduc, Stacie Dern, Lori Hershey, Greg Tison, Barbara Toscano, and John Turner. The seat appeared on the primary ballot on August 30, 2016, and Hershey and Toscano advanced to the general election because no candidate received 50 percent of the primary vote. Hershey won the seat in the general election. One other seat was also up for by-district primary election on August 30, 2016: Warren A. Jones defeated fellow newcomers Bradford Hall, Brenda Jordan, and Hank Rogers for the open District 5 seat. The District 1 and District 3 seats were originally set to be on the primary ballot. But when the District 1 incumbent Cheryl Grymes and the District 3 incumbent Ashley Smith Juarez were unopposed in their bids for re-election, the elections for those seats were canceled and the incumbents automatically re-elected to another term.[1]
