Melody Schopp is a former South Dakota secretary of education. She had been serving as the interim secretary when Gov. Dennis Daugaard took office in January 2011 and was formally appointed to the position on April 7, 2011.[1] On October 16, 2017, Schopp announced her retirement, stating that her final day in office would be December 15, 2017.[2]

Biography

Schopp was raised in Greeley, Colorado, and taught for 23 years in Lemmon, South Dakota.[3] She worked for the state Department of Education for 11 years before she was named as interim South Dakota secretary of education in 2010.[4]

Schopp was appointed to serve as the secretary of education by Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R). She had been serving as the interim secretary when Daugaard took office in January 2011 and was formally appointed to the position on April 7, 2011.[5] Schopp retired on December 15, 2017.

Schopp was appointed as interim South Dakota secretary of education in December 2010 by then Gov.-elect Dennis Daugaard. She was serving as deputy secretary at the time. Schopp stated, “I am making no assumptions at this point as to what will happen after. I am serving at the pleasure of the governor-elect at this point and would be honored to serve in the permanent role going forward.”[4]
