Melvyn Tanenbaum was an associate justice for the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court. He served on the 9th and 10th Judicial Districts and took office in 2004. He also served on the Suffolk County Supreme Court (10th Judicial District). He was elected to that court in 1983 and became a certificated justice in 2006. He retired in 2011.[1][2][3]

Education

Tanenbaum received his B.S. degree from New York University in 1955 and his J.D. degree from the New York Law School in 1957. He later received his L.L.M. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1992.[1]

Career

Tanenbaum began his career in 1958 as a private practice lawyer. He worked in this position until 1974. He also worked as Assistant and Special Counsel to the Suffolk County Water Authority (1959-1963) and as Associate Counsel to the South Huntington Water District (1969-1974). He was also a Suffolk County Assistant Attorney from 1971 to 1973.

Tanenbaum began his judicial career in 1974 as a Suffolk County Court judge. He served in this position through 1983. He was also an Acting Supreme Court Justice from 1979 to 1983. He was elected to the Supreme Court in 1983.[1]
