On April 20, 2018, the Miami Herald reported that Ehrlich was resigning, following the death of a defendant that had appeared in front of Ehrlich on April 15, 2018. Sandra Faye Twiggs died three days after appearing in Broward County court on misdemeanor charges. The Herald obtained video from the courtroom showing Ehrlich scolding the defendent and her attorneys. Twiggs was found dead by family on the morning of April 18, 2018, a day after being released from jail. Howard Finkelstein, the elected public defender of Broward County, called for Ehrlich to be banned from the courthouse because of the incident.[7]
