Candidate Connection

Merritt Hamilton Allen participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on March 27, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Merritt Hamilton Allen's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Accountability and transparency of all state government agencies

2) Economic growth through an improved tax system and better infrastructure
3) Curbing crime by hiring more police, prosecutors and public defenders.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

The central issue of my campaign has plagued NM for at least 50 years: a regressive tax system that is used to fund poorly performing schools. We are the last state to employ gross receipts taxes on all business income to generate revenue. GRT results in double- and triple- taxing once a business uses local vendors. We take half of our state revenues, funded by GRT, and pour it into a public school system that in 2018 still has only a 71% high school graduation rate. New Mexicans deserve better.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Merritt Hamilton Allen answered the following:

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

NM Legislators must be committed to passing an acceptable (non-vetoable) budget each year. Delaying budget passage costs our citizens money every day. Legislators must also be open and accountable in their actions. Finally, Legislators must reflect put their constituents' needs ahead of partisan policies.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
New Mexico's greatest challenge will be to hold on to our existing business base as surrounding states are experiencing growth far above our own. We say we are too reliant on the federal government and the oil and gas industry. If we are not careful, we could lose even these crucial supports of our economy.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you've heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I have noted that when it comes to our top issues in New Mexico - economy, schools, crime - there isn't a lot of partisan talk from residents. They just want it to be better. That tells me we don't have the luxury of partisan debate in some of our worst cases - we have to simply restore function and accountability to many public agencies to get them operating competently before we push them to partisan policies.[3]
